Reinaldo Ferrer, said Sunday that the strike created no health emergency. Willie Whalen, the union local president, said he called the strike Saturday night because "they management! offered us nothing since last week." THE NEGOTIATIONS recessed Friday, with the union seeking contract improvements calculated by management to be worth $168 a week for each of its 2,000 member drivers and plant workers. The last management offer, $41 more in the first year and an additional $26 in the second of a two-year contract, was turned down on Feb. 17. The old contract provided a $295 week- ly base- pay for in-plant workers.

Drivers, who receive commissions, earned somewhat more. NEW YORK APJ A surprise strike against 85 New York City and Long Island milk dealers cut off supplies of milk to 10 million consumers on Sunday. Some retailers began limiting milk jales immediately, but effects of the strike of drivers and processors were not expected to be felt until Monday. A milk industry spokesman, Irving Wisch, said retailers' supplies would run out by Tuesday unless supplies came in from neighboring states. No talks between the union, Teamsters Union Local 584, and milk dealers were scheduled before Tuesday.

WISCH, CHAIRMAN of the Milk Deal-. crs Labor Committee, said the struck milk plants would lose $1 million in milk that was processed but not delivered because of tlie strike. The VA is studying the effects on soldiers of nuclear weapons tests and of herbicides used in Viet Nam. Sources familiar with the amputation study say the academy's Medical Follow-up Agency examined the records of about 12,000 World War II servicemen. About 3,900 had amputated limbs, and another 3,000 had lost a foot or hand. These groups were compared with 5,000 men who were wounded or disfigured without amputation. THE EXAMINATION found that those having one or both legs amputated, at or above the knee had a 150 per cent higher death rate from cardiovascular disease than other wounded veterans.

WASHINGTON AP Limb amputation can significantly Increase the risk of death from heart disease, a new study says. The finding may mean increased benefits for some military veterans and further expansion of the definition of service-related injury. The unpublished National Academy of Sciences study, which was done for the Veterans Administration, is the first hard evidence of the amputation-heart disease link, although it has been suspected for several years. VA spokesmen said the agency has been evaluating the study since December. The report, with VA comment and proposed benefit changes for some amputees, may be sent to Congress this week, the spokesmen added.

VA SOURCES, though reluctant to discuss details of the study, said it shows that heart problems in amputees can be service-related and therefore eligible for turn Church. Interment Queen of. Heaven cemetery. 637-044? or 437-0450. Visitation begins Monday, after 5:30 p.m.
