Chicago Tribune, Monday, June 27, 1977 Section 5 9 Shortage of unleaded gas seen next year New York Times News Service WASHINGTON-Although gasoline supplies are nearing record levels, a potentially severe shortage of unleaded fuels looms for next summer, according to government and oil industry sources. Despite the indications of coming supply problems, energy officials in the Carter administration say they are almost certain to seek price decontrol next fall, after the heavy summer driving season. The expected shortage supposedly will be a result of the growing number of new low-polluting cars, which require unleaded fuel. Meanwhile, the oil industry has not -installed enough of the special equipment needed to produce unleaded gasoline. WHETHER THE SHORTAGE actually occurs reportedly will depend on two environmental questions: whether the tightening lead standards are relaxed, and whether a somewhat obscure chemical known as MMT is banned.

The lead standards require oil refiners to assure that beginning Jan. 1, 1978, the average lead content of both leaded and unleaded gasoline is reduced to 0.8 grams per gallon. A number of refineries have applied for waivers from these requirements, but none have yet been approved. MMT for methylcyclopentadienyl manganese is used in place of lead to achieve a high octane level. Without MMT, and without lead, high octane can be achieved only by cutting production.

THE AUTO COMPANIES object to MMT, contending that it makes ineffective their catalytic converters, the new cars' primary pollution control device. The Senate recently passed a bill banning use of the chemical in gasoline. "If we lose MMT and don't get an exemption from lead phase-down, things could really be tight next summer," said Joe T. McMillan, general manager of supply, in the Exxon Corporation's domestic subsidiary. Nonetheless, Exxon continues to support price decontrol.

According to F. Scott Bush, deputy associate adminstrator of the Federal Energy Adminstration, the gasoline outlook is under review and hearings are expected in August. 50,000 honor Neumann in Philadelphia rites New York Times News Service to the saint's birthplace in Bohemia, PHILADELPHIA-Tens of thou- now a province of Czechoslovakia, sands of Philadelphians flocked to an and disclosed that the school John outdoor mass and concert Sunday Neumann attended as a youth had honoring St. John Neumann, who was been taken over by the Communists. canonized by the Catholic Church in Sunday, the people of the city were Rome a week ago and is known here invited out in the street to honor the as, "The Little Bishop of Philadel- spirit of the saint.
