Read by the Decision-Makers of Texas Austin, Texas, Sunday, July 2, 1972 HOME EDITION Vol. 47-No. 62 184 Poges-12 Ports 25 Cents Texas9 Senior Ranger Sunday the news inside Capt. Clint Peoples: He Gets His Man to catch Clyde and Bonnie when the pair came to visit the brother in Conroe. "But Clyde wouldn't let Dude out of the house when he came to town," Peoples recalled.

Through an informant the deputy learned the Barrow gang was hiding out with a group of bootleggers in the river bottom country near Nacogdoches. Peoples, the sheriff, a Texas Ranger and other lawmen went to the supposed hiding place and found the outlaws had already left for Arcadia, (See TEXAS, Page A12) Soft-spoken, deeply religious and always ready with a friendly word, Peoples missed by two days being the peace officer who caught up with Clyde Barrow and his gun moll, Bonnie Parker. The near miss of the Barrow gang came in 1934, two days before they were shot to death on a Louisiana back road. At the time, Peoples was a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Clyde's brother, "Dude" Barrow lived in Conroe and Peoples knew him well.

Peoples, along with other lawmen, tried several times as a keepsake. He had a gunsmith saw off the ruined barrel tip and presented the small handgun to his wife, Donna. The close call was just one of the many times the ranger captain has flirted with violent death. Peoples is now senior ranger captain, the man in charge of the elite 82-man agency, unlike any other in the Northern Hemisphere. He is the first of the famed lawmen to bear the title of senior ranger captain since the colorful Rip Ford was bestowed the honor in 1858.

The veteran ranger's eyes widened. The hijacker had a pistol leveled at the lawmen. The suspect pulled the trigger and it looked like the end of Peoples' spectacular career. The gun exploded literally. The end of the barrel I ballooned.

It was blocked with mud, a result of the robbery suspect's flight through the quagmire. "The Good Lord's always had his hand on my shoulder," Peoples smiled. "He sure did that time." The ranger got his man and was later given the revolver By MIKE COX Staff Writer The 6-foot-tall Texas Ranger captain moved through the trees, his boots squishing in the mud, as he followed a trail of blood. An armed robbery suspect had been shot in the leg by his would-be viotim and was now on the run. In hot pursuit was Capt.
