(AP) Wales Madden 38-year-old Amarillo attorney, said Monday that the state Democratic Party leadership has "expressed the hope" he will seek nomination for the 18th district congressional seat.

Rep. Walter Rogers, a Democrat who has held the since 1950 and who won the May 3 primary for nomination for a ninth term, announced last week he would not run for re-election in November. Rogers, 58 and from Pampa, said pressures on his family were one reason he is stepping down. He said he would practice law in Washington and in Pampa. The Democratic nominee will face Republican Bob Price, a 38 year old Pampa rancher, Nov.

8. Madden, a former University of Texas regent, had this to say about the situation: "They've (state Democratic leaders) expressed the hope that I would" seek the seat. But, "I don't want to get the impression over that I'm the candidate of the governor. I'm my own candidate." Walter Knapp of Amarillo, unopposed for his third term in the Texas House of Representatives, said Monday he is actively seeking Rogers' seat. He said there is "going to be a wild scramble for the spot on the ballot." Knapp is 35.

The new nominee is to be selected by the 30 county Democratic chairman whose counties' are in the 18th district. An observor said a meeting of the chairmen was "very likely" at the end of this week. Madden said he has not yet decided whether to seek the nomination. Rogers beat Price two years ago by 10,000 votes out of 000 cast. The Panhandle district has a population of some 000.

(AP) Space walker Michael Collins disclosed Monday he made three; trips from Gemini 10 to an old, lifeless rocket before he finally got firm grip on the satellite and plucked an experiment from its side. Collins and his flying companion, Navy Cmdr. John W.

Young, told of these and other problems encountered during the three-day flight of Gemini 10 at a Manned Spacecraft Center news conference. The dramatic mission ended July 21. Young said that the fuel shortage that plagued the entire mission developed after he found the spaceship out of plane with the Agena rendezvous rocket they chased four times around the world the first night to link up with it. "We had to use the brute force method to overcome a large out-of-plane error," Young said. "That takes quite a bit of fuel." Nevertheless, Gemini 10 brought back to earth a bundle of records and accomplishments after locking to the Agena and borrowing its power for maneuvering to a record altitude of 476 miles and a rendezvous with the old Agena, left in orbit after the flight of Gemini 8.

Young and Collins teamed to prove that man could chase a powerless rocket in the sky without use of radar, then fly in formation with it to allow a space walker to ease over for an inspection. Collins' difficulty was in getto the target and keeping a firm hold on one end of it in order to retrieve an experiment that had collected information in micrometeorites in space. "I grabbed a docking bar on the Agena and it was necessary to hand-over-hand myself over to the other side whert the S-10 (the experiment) was attached. "When I got there, my body inertia kept me going and I slipped. At this point I felt' that it would be wise to go back to Gemini 10 and start over again." The second attempt, he said, sent him in a curved path toward the Agena and back to the spacecraft because he 'had picked up some rotating motion on his body.

"The combination of this and straight-forward thrust" of the gun caused me to fly kitid of a curved path like an airplane approaching an airport," Collins said. Young had steered Gemini 10 to within about five feet of the Agena at the time. Later," he backed away to about 15 feet. "John moved slightly farther away," Collins said, "and I moved straight ahead this time, using the gun to get to the Agena. I insured not getting away by using some wires and other objects on the Agena as.
