14 THE COURIEK D.e. IV, 1964 The Player Who Is 'On xf tr Even Among Kingpins Defence Is Minus Oldtime Tenacity By RIC ROBERTS PITTSBURGH What has happened to the defensive side of our football? Once worn aa a jealously guarded badge, especially by. national champions, the old "they shall not pass" aphorism, as coined for the ages at Verdun, by World War I French soldiers, is no longer possible on our champions. For a case in point, note" that Prairie View's two year national championship reign, 1963 and 1964, is marked by respective enemy scoring totals of 154 and 111 points. What makes these hulking totals significant is that, In all the 45 year parade of national champions, leading back to Coach Edwin Morrison's 1920 Bison herd, at Howard University, none save the 1963 and 1964 Nicks men allowed the enemy as many as 100 points, in any year.

Let u.j look at the top forces of 1964 Pr. View (90 0), Grambling; (9 3 0) Tenn. All (H2 Lincoln (Mo.) (8 2 0) X. Cr. AtT (6 8 1 Morrn State (7 2 0) $.

C. State (7 2 0) Ye. State (6 2 0) Md. SUte (12 1) lackeon SUte 0) Edward Waters (9 0 0) liMkegee Institute 2). Ala.

AIM (611) I. C. Smith (7 2 1) Fort Valley (62 0) Ky. SUte (7 3 0) Bethune Cooknian (6 3 0) toward U. (8 2 0) It Is quite obvious that the loregoing rankings are based on what the "twenty elevens" achieved, respectively relative to their schedules.

AIo obvious is the fact tliat Southern University, playing the year's toughest schedule (28.84), would be favored to defeat half of the listed teams. The same would true with reference to such as Texas Southern, Alcorn, Arkansas AMN and North Carolina! College. AU of the season's first division elevens are not listed, the absentees being Mortis Brown (3 4 1, Mississippi Valley (5 4 Bu hop (3 4 1. S. C.

Aim (8 0 0), along with the three 5 5 0 units: Texas Southern, Alcorn and the Aikansas Lions. The latter throe being first divisioners because they own at least one first division victory. THK FACTOK that catches the knowng eye, here, is the fact that the live top teams allowed a combined total of 908 enemy points. This means that the present d.iy variables of the formation aie unstoppable. Football's mechanics must come up with some research on the defensive side, or the game will lapse into the heltci kelter tempo that now marks basketball.
