This came when they tended to the kind of knitting they, know best, the old fashioned frontal assault game, and they poured it on outmanned Tulane often enough to ring up a 31-0 victory before 60,000 Band Night fans. The victory was the 12th straight for Texas and it matched two previous 12-game streaks that came in 1912-13 and again in 1920-21. As they did eight times last year, but not against Tulane in a 21-0 game that, started the current Orange victory streak, the Longhorns turned their first possession into points. They carried the ball straight at the Louisianans and ate up 72 defending national champions ripped to opener. (UPI)-Halfback Jack Harper set up one touchdown, then rambled 80 yards on a punt return to score another Saturday to pace Florida to a 24-8 win over Southern Methodist. Mississippi State fumbled four times and lost the ball, twice throwing away touchdowns. And Dan Bland carried a kickoff back 89 yards only to have the apparent touchdown wiped out by a penalty. Texas Tech's Teddy Roberts intercepted two passes, one preventing a touchdown and the other setting up a touchdown. Jim Zanios, the Tech fullback, rammed across for two touchdown on short runs.

Tech fumbled some, too, and one of its miscues set up the Mississippi State touchdown. Ark. (AP) -Billy Gray, an offensive castoff relegated to the defensive secondary, took over at quarter-hack again Saturday night and built Arkansas a 14-10 football victory over Oklahoma State University. A near sellout crowd of 40,000 saw Gray engineer Razorback scoring drives of 55 and 64 yards in the non-conference season opener for both teams, i Jim Lindsey, a long-legged wingback, sprinted 18 yards for an Arkansas touchdown with 3:01 left in the second quarter.

Tailback Bobby Burnett crashed over from the two for the second Porker score with seven seconds to go in the third quarter. Gray set up both touchdowns. He shot a 23-yard pass to end Jerry Lamb to the OSU 18 to pave the way for Lindsey's dash. He passed for 25 yards, ran for nine and sneaked for a crucial first down on the Cowboy two prior to Burnett's touchdown. The Cowboys threatened four times, but they cashed in only twice.

In the third quarter they pushed 40 yards in 13 plays with halfback Larry Elliott banging in from the one on fourth down. Charles Durkee booted a 37-yard field goal with 11:23 to go in the fourth quarter. Earlier Durkee twice missed field goals of similar length. Ernie Koy, again starting the year at a new position, dove in the final yard for the touchdown from his tailback position.

Then Texas used the point kicking of sophomore David Conway from Baytown to run up a 10-0 halftime lead. Conway converted after the first touchdown, with Joe Dixon his holder, and the pair teamed up early in the second period for a 28-yard field goal that rode a balmy south wind through the uprights. The Longhorns took complete command 'of the game in the second half and moved the ball in spectacular fashion at times. The scoring plays were all short shots of a yard or less. Koy banged in on another sweep for the second touchdown of the game and quarterbacks Jim Hudson and Gary Moore barged in on sneak plays for the last two.

Conway, who has taken over the converting for never miss Tony Crosby, also had a perfect string of four for four going. For Screen, a 5-foot-ll, 185 pound junior from New Orleans, it was a triumphal return to the gridiron after being sidelined most of last season with a severe shoulder injury. Charlie McClendon, starting his third season as LSU head coach, had promised a surprise and it was his pro-type offense, This particular bit of heroism wasn't as Tulane yielded, 31-0.

One of Tulane's few chances to smile against Texas Saturday night came on this play when the Wave's Pete Johns went wide to elude Texas tackle John Elliott on this punt return..
