The question was asked with the release of Universal "Two-Minute Warning," the football stadium sniper movie, and with "The Car," the killer-auto flick. The question also is appropriate for "Rollercoast-. er, which, as those other films, is merely a death-; anticipation trip. In the film, a young man (Timothy Bottoms), extorts money from an assortment of amusement park owners by threatening to blow up their rollercoaster rides.

To make his threat credible, the young man blows up one coaster and its 24 passengers. Five days lat-; er he sets fire to another coaster. Only then does the young man stick an association of amusement park owners with his demand: $1 million, or he'll destroy more coasters. Nice movie, huh? Just in time for the summer amusement park season. I hope the guys who wrote this script choke on their next cotton "ndy an( one near them knows the Heimlich antichoking manuever.

THE FILM'S opening explosion scene is particular-; Iy sick. The young extortionist blows up a section of coaster track. When the rollercoaster hits that track, its cars parppn tn ihn llliiiiiiiiliiiiiiPiiH i wisp ipfe: li mm' -4 n- -kW-i T1frtalLa)jaa1i( ers in the theater rattle your eardrums and vibrate your seat at various points during the ride. But the use of "Sensurround" only underscores death-preoccupation of the film. What the people who made "Rollercoaster" are trying to do is create a disaster visually and aurally.

What might help is having the theater ceiling rain blood. That's not all that's depressing about "Rollercoaster." Each character in this mean-spirited script is portrayed as deeply flawed, if not corrupt. FBI agent Widmark is glory-hungry. The amusement park owners are money-hungry. Segal is divorced and chain-smokes.

Segal's boss, building inspector Henry Fonda, has fudged reports to benefit his nephew ia the construction business. Henry Fonda dishonest? Hey, what's going on here? The success of the space fantasy film "Star Wars" has been attributed to its clearly drawn forces of good and evil and to its healthy, fun-loving action. In "Rollercoaster," however, virtually everyone is evil. And the action in the picture is the kind that seeks to take advantage of your fears. Fake explosions are forever being tossed at us in "Rollercoaster." A sudden loud noise turns out to be the ringing of a telephone or sound of a target being hit at an amusement game.

Those are cheap tricks that abuse an audience. Star Wars" likes its audience; "Rollercoaster" does not. Suburban Theatres ground, killing or injuring its riders. At this point 20 min-tues into the picture one realizes that "Rollercoaster," like "The Car," is a traffic accident masquerading as a movie. Sickies in the audience will be thrilled to learn that two stuntpersons were injured during the filming of the opening crash scene. Trying to capture the extortionist are Richard Widmark, a stem Federal DAILY iSAT Bureau of Investigation agent, and George Segal, a Los Angeles safety inspector. The film is mostly a cross-country cat-and- mouse-game between Bottoms, the extortionist, and Segal, the inspector.

The script tries to give iis one of those relationships in which criminal and ad- versary grow to respect each other-and no one clse-; during the course of their chase. The major problem with that is Bottoms' character one of the dullest villains imaginable. He has no sense of humor. His only motivation is greed, and he doesn't appear to be too thrilled about the prospect of getting the money. His character is in a trance.

And, as with the anonymous killer in "Two- Minute Warning," we never learn Bottoms' characters name. I suppose that means he represents all our unnamed fears. What garbage. TECHNICALLY. "ROLLERCOASTER" is a cut other disaster films.

(Brief shots of the Chicago skyline are beautiful.) The rollercoaster foot-age, itself, is well done and occasionally evokes the stomach-in-mouth feeling of a real ride.
