Envoy Says Aussies See War Need Capitol Staff Antiwar protests have generated little enthusiasm in Australia because the people there are closer to Vietnam, the Australian ambassador to the United States said here Tuesday. "I don't think anyone likes war, but I think the Australian people have less difficulty understanding why we are there because we live in the area of fighting," said Sir Keith Waller. Waller, who was in Austin to address the English Speaking Union, has been a house guest of Gov.

and Mrs. Preston Smith since Sunday. He has made several visits to Texas. The ambassador said the Australian people are vitally concerned about the fate Of their South Vietnamese neighbors and have an fighting force there. We believe profoundly that small nations can't afford to sit by and see other states destroyed by the aggression of their neighbors," he said.

He added that peace demonstrations have been small, and pointed to the reelection of the present government in October as an indicator of support for the Vietnam policy. Waller, who has been in Washington for five years, says one of the major problems between the United States and Australia is an "unfavorable" balance of trade. Australia buys about $1 billion worth of American goods annually while the U.S. purchases about half that amount from Australia, he said. This, he said, is enough to "cause any Australian official a great deal of anxiety." Waller Creek Trial Begins Wednesdav The trial of 14 persons charged with disorderly conduct last October i in the Waller Creek tree demonstrations will begin at 9 a.m.

Wednesday in Justice of the Peace Bob Kuhn's Court. The persons were arrested after a demonstration at a construction site along Waller Creek on the University of Texas campus to save several trees which were being removed to make way for the displacement of San Jacinto Blvd. The street was being moved westward to make room for the' enlargement of Memorial Stadium.
