Thursday Evening, May 17, 1962 CLASS of 62 HIGH SCHOOL Logansport, Indiana, Pharos-Tribune Throe DEMOCRATIC MEETING Murray To BeCalled OackTheGiantKiller' 'Jack, Tl4 Giant Killer" is the 1 name Circuit Judge Jack Murray, of Knox, will be given in his campaign lo unseat House Minority Leader Charles A. Halleck, it was decided at the second district Democratic reorganization feet- ing Wednesday afternoon in this city.. Judge Murray told the Democratic county chairmen and vice- chairmen assembled in the Cass county party headquarters that he is taking on the No. 1 Republican in the United States. "It is only right, therefore, that the No. 1 Democrat, President John F. Kennedy! speak here in the second district during the campaign," Judge Murray said. He urged the party leaders present to use their influence to get the President to come lo tho district before the election in November. Howard Weningcr, of North Judson, Starke county chairman, was re-elected district chairman and Mrs. Gerald Hershberger, Logansport, was reflected dis- trict vice-chairman in the biennial election of officers. Mrs. Louise Wlieeler, Lafayette, Tippecanoe county vice-chairman, was re-elected secretary, and Robert Bower, Brook, was elected treasurer, succeeding Ray Hershman, of Renssclaer. Rep. Birch Bayh, candidate for U. S. Senator, is sponsoring two dinner meetings of county chairmen and vice-chairmen and delegates in (he district next month, it was announced. One will be June 11 at 7 p.m. in Rensselaer for Pulaski, White, Porter, Slarke, Bcnton, Newton, and Jasper counties. The other on June 9, for the other counties in the district, will be Logansport. The next district meeting will be June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Anglers near Monlicello. KEWANNA Photo By Burgman WhaleyWill NotStand Trial Here Kenneth Whaley, 34, farm hand of near Walton, will not stand trial at.the present time for the dealh of Mrs. Marlha Horton, 47, of Galveston, because he is mentally ill, Judge Norman Kiesling ruled Wednesday in the Cass circuit court. Two psychiatrists from Long- cliff who examined Whaley advised Judge Kiesling that the def— ' ' 'o to comprehend and properly defend the charges of second degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. They were filed against him April 4 by Prosecutor Earl Palmer. Whaley was ordered by Judge Kiesling to be confined in the maximum security section of Dr. Norman Beatty Memorial hospital at Westville until he is declared Mrs. Norton's death in front of her home occurred after Whaley had taken her home from a tavern where they had been drinking beer on March 23. His car allegedly ran over her. Whaley was arrested in a Peru motel the following night and was taken to Longcliff two days later when he suffered a breakdown in the Cass county jail. Youth Admits Peru Robbery PERU-Terry Mills, 20, of 276 East Eighth St., admitted Wednesday . that he and an accomplice robbed Edwin Hiers, rural route 1, Peru, of $412 the morning of May .3.
