All hope for the 13 was abandoned tonight. For seven hours Royal Navy rescue experts worked in an effort to find any who might have survived both the blast and the engulfing waters 36 feet down. Then they gave up. There were no signs of life aboard.

Seven other crewmen escaped with slight injuries seconds after the explosion in the starboard torpedo room tore apart the for ward section of the 1,000 ton craft, sent yellow smoke billowing from the conning tower and rocked this south coast naval base. Moored at Time The Sidon was metered at the time alongside the supply ship Maidstone. She was preparing to leave the harbor on torpedo firing exercises. J. P.

L. Thomas, first lord of the admiralty, told the House of Commons in London "an oxygen explosion in a torpedo" caused the blast. "There was a sudden rush of air and smoke through the conning tower hatch," Thomas said. 'Survivors started to escape and the captain and other officers and men who were on the bridge of the submarine, as well as officers from HMS Maidstone, entered the submarine to assist in -rescue operations. "As far as my information goes at the moment, I think the loss of life was entirely due to the explosion." Lt.

Cmdr. Hugh Verry, the Sidon's commanding officer, said he went below as soon as the explosion occurred, "but I was driven back by choking smoke and debris, which blocked the passage in the seamen's mess deck forward of the wardroom." Leave Granted Leave was granted to all surviving members of the crew. The heart breaking rescue task was directed by Lt. Cmdr. A.

V. Emery. He told of the end of the quest in these words: "As there are now no signs of life on the sub, operation 'Sub Sank' has been abandoned." The young officer looked wearily over the side of the Maidstone and shook his head. Below him at the -vater line, green and white bubbles still churned the surface. "Then it's all over?" he was asked.

"All over for those 13 down there below us." he replied. "But how do you know they are dead?" "Divers," he said. "They've tapped and tapped on her sides." One of the divers, his rubNr suit still dripping, said: "Not a sign from there." This is the third submarine disaster on which Emery has worked. He told how this one took place: "At 8:25, there was a severe explosion in the torpedo compartment of the Sidon. "All hatches except the conning tower hatch were shut.

"This was normal. Then came the blast. "The ship's company started up the conning tower hatch. "Rescue and medical parties from the Maidstone rushed to the sub. Full of i)moke "The rescuers went below.

There were no lights. The sub was full of smoke and debris. "Furniture and loose fittings were jammed around the bulkhead door4. "It was not possible for any personnel left alive in the sub to reach them." The sub began sinking.
