July 20 (PV-The spires that have dominated the Baylor University campus since 1886 are being torn down because they're weak and dangerous. Demolition work began Monday on the towers of Old Main and Georgia Burleson Hall for women.

Dr. W. R. White, Baylor president, said the university hopes to replace the two old brick buildings themselves "within the next ftw years." He said the new buildings might have reinforced towers similar to the old spires. Dr.

White said an architectural study of the old towers was ordered after a tornado May 11 tore up downtown Waco and killed 114 persons. The architects found that if the twister had hit the Baylor campus the spires probably would have crumbled and any other high wind still might knock them down. "We dare not sacrifice safety for the sake of sentiment," Dr. White said, The towers are being sheared off even with the roofs of the three-story buildings.
