It is not great art, nor is it the definitive photoplay about Jesus (will there ever be but it is at least permeated by a soberness of purpose that, allowing for ordinary human fallibility, can be tacitly felt and respected. Technically, of course, it is far glossier than the C. B. DeMille movie of 1927, and very probably at least its equal in effectiveness.

Dramatically, I think, it falls somewhere between the theatrical entertainment that was "Bcn-Iiur" and the spiritual but spiritless "Francis of Assisi." The MGM film is, to put it another way, more religious than religioso, the latter being the handy trade appellation for that mixture of sex, spectacle and Scripture which has passed for the Bible so often in the past. It comes closest to sex in its portrayal (comparatively restrained) of Salome's dance, and to spectacle in the insurrection of the Jews, led by Barabbas, and their rout and massacre by the Roman phalanxes a dramatic invention but one that heightens the climax when juxtaposed to Christ's first and final appearance as the Messiah in the tern- TODAY WE think about. Ustinov. King Jamies version of the Lord's Prayer, the playing-down of the vengeful role of the Scribes and Pharisees, and so on, It is my own feeling that the Way of the Cross became more terribly unforgettable in "Ben-IIur Where "King of Kings" excels is in what the billing calls "the glory of His spoken words," beautifully restated in the Sermon on the Mount and in the exchanges with His worshipers that follow. What what nobility, are here! Gathered thus from so many quotations and heard as a continuous revelation, they, can only leave the listener In a state of dazzled and bemused wonderment. By this time, here on the Mount, Jeffrey Hunter has found more strength of voice than he was able to summon in the ear lier sequences but the Ideal is still to be found. Who speaks for the Lord? Orson Welles, otherwise the film's narrator (uncredited), have given more solemnity to the occasion.

In appearance Hunter conveys more of the aspect of the gentle Jesus though even here make-up imparts, at moments, a kind of unintended shadowy, saturnine quality. His personal dedication is exemplary. Character Players Singled Out The large and varied cast contributes in as many degrees. I was particularly struck by Ron Randell's Lucius, the Centurion; the Barabbas of Harry Guar-dino. the Judas of Rip Torn, the Pontius Pilate of Hurd Hatfield and the Herod Antipas of Frank Thring.

But Robert Ryan's John the Baptist came out thinly. Among the women were Siobhan Mc-Kenna as Mary, Viveca Lindfors, Carmen Sevilla, Rita Gam and Brigid Bazlen as a curiously childish Salome.
