'CARDIAC KIDS' HOLD OFF HUSKERS tackles from cornerback Tyrone Hudson, a fleet JC transfer, in the first half, some injurious errors and adversity," ha said, had to play a flawlesi game against a great USC team. That is tough to do." Across the field, McKay "was saying that Nebraska "could play real well in our league," but he wasn't so complimentary of his team's defensive performance. "Defensively," he said forlornly, "we're still terrible. We're gonna have to get after people from hert on." 8 SBC. 1969 gog8ngcItOmtg2 MURRAY'S COLUMN Continued from Firtt Page tibn in return for our entertainment.

I make more money than any three university chancellors, or any hundred astronomers! Hey where, are you going? Gregory: "I am going to pray forgiveness for having started all this.

No wonder I've been kept waiting at the gates of Paradise all these years!" ALWAYS TOUGH recovered an on-side kick and headed goalward again from the Trojan 47. In 12 plays, after passes of 16 yards to wingback Larry Frost and 11 yards to Kinney, plus a USC piling-on penalty, Nebraska sliced the lead to 28-21 on a two -yard keeper by Tagge. The Trojans hoped to run out the clock. But they were forced to punt and had to dig in again. With 2:15 to play, Nebraska started marching from its 32 -yard line.

Tagge, given a terrific pass rush, threw the ball over the middle on first down. There was no receiver there, but Young was. He picked it off and ran it back 25 yards to the Cornhusker 24. Six plays later, after a brilliant Chandler catch of a 12-yard pass from Jones, Ayala put the game out of reach with his field goal from an angle to the right. Just 23 Seconds Left There were only 23 seconds left and the Trojans could breathe comfortably again.

When it was 0 Nebraska coach Bob but gave up vast chunks of "yardage in the air to Nebraska's ailing sophomore quarterbacks, starter Van Brownson (7 of 11 for 61 yards), and his replacement. Jerry Tagge (8 of 14 for 76 yards). Late Interception Ironically, USC got an interception from safety John Young to snuff out Nebraska's last-gasp bid for a touchdown in the final two minutes, then moved out of danger on Ron Ayala's 34-yard field goal in the waning seconds. Two things contributed mostly to the USC pass defense breakdown: the absence of veteran tackle Al Cowlings in the second half because of a bruised knee and Nebraska's double-wing passing formation. "We were in a man-toman coverage against their double wing," said McKay.

"That made it difficult for us until we went back into a zone. When we did, that's when Young made that interception." Twice in the fourth quarter, the Cornhuskers drove to within scoring range to the USC seven and to the 16 only to be thrown back on fourth down. But Nebraska, with the help of pass interference violations by USC's Hudson and Gerry Shaw for 31 and 5 yards, respectively, marched 55 yards in eight plays. Sophomore tailback Jeff Kinney charged up the middle for 12 yards to make it 28-14 with minutes to play. Then the Cornhuskers i Trojans Need Course on Winning Easily PRUGH Writer said Nebraska's defenses began to tighten, too.

"They were sliding with both the fullback and me," he said. "That made it tougher. I'm disappointed that I didn't go all the way." And how does it feel to be filling O. celebrated football shoes? "I've thought about that a lot," he replied, "but then you have to realize that O. gone.

This is a new era. Somebody has to be his replacement. It just happened to be me." Fortunately for USC, Davis stayed healthy enough to supply most of the footwork on an afternoon when Jones was hardly in any shape to do much running. McKay Approves "Jimmy did all right, especially considering we didn't want him running very much," said McKay, who added that he decided during the re-game warmups that Jones was at least fit to throw the football. "He couldn't audibilize too much, either, because it was hard for anybody to hear out there.

His back probably bothered him only because he hadn't practiced the last few days. But the final answer about all quarterbacks is whether they win the game." Jones, dressing in another corner of the room, said he "felt pretty good, except after the first quarter" when his back started bothering him. "It hurts the motion of my throwing," he added. "I could have played a lot better if I'd felt 100 percent OK, but the next game I think, will be easier for me." Battle for Survival Saturday's game was a struggle for the Trojans in the beginning, a breeze through the middle stages, then finally a battle for survival at the finish. Thanks to Jones' two scoring passes plus a couple of one-yard touchdown dives by reserve tailback Mike Berry, whose parents had flown in from his hometown of Minneapolis for the game, USC was in command offensively.

But it was the Trojan defense, particularly the deep secondary, which asserted itself only sporadically in a game that was filled with pass-interference penalties, most of them against USC. The Trojans got a couple of touchdown -saving "Seese seems a celebration of new stage freedom. Another of those mistakes was a controversial 20-yard pass to reserve split end Gary Orcutt which he apparently threw from two yards beyond the line of scrimmage, a violation that was not called by the officials. Nebraska pla yers protested the late second quarter play in vain. Four plays later Jones swept to his left and found Evans in the end zone for the touchdown that gave USC a 21-7 lead at the half. Davis' debut perhaps was more auspicious, considering that he is Simpson's replacement. He came to USC after breaking one of Simpson's national JC rushing records at East Los Angeles and quickly broke another one Saturday afternoon.

Tops Simpson Mark Twisting and slashing for 114 yards on 27 carries, most of them through holes blasted open by left guard Fred Khasigian and sophomore tackle John Vella in the first half, Davis bettered the first-game performance of Simpson two years ago 19 carries for 93 yards in a 49-0 win over Washington State. What's more, Davis got 88 of those yards in the first half despite suffering from dizzy spells that were attributed to both the heat (it was close to 90 degrees on the field) and a mysterious loss of weight. "I was down to about 180 but I'm about five pounds heavier now," said Davis, who was surprised when told he had carried the ball 27. times. USC's Fred Khasigian, tired and perspiring in his street clothes, shook his head in bewilderment.

I don't know why it is," said the veteran offensive guard, "but we have this tendency to let down when we get 'way ahead. Maybe it's because we can't get used to being ahead by so much." Through three quarters Saturday afternoon, the USC football team had practically chased Nebraska's Cornhuskers all the way to the Rockies, only to see its 28-7 lead nearly disappear in the last 6V minutes of a 31-21 triumph. "I guess we're the Cardiovascular Boys now," said senior tackle Sid Smith, in ja mock reference to the Cardiac Kids nickname that was given the Trojans last season. Kept Poise I think we can play better. At least, we always kept our poise.

We didn't panic when things got tough." USC's stubbornness on plays that could have turned the game around (Nebraska was stopped five times inside Troy's 30-yard line) were about all that coach John McKay could cheer about Saturday. The Trojans were assessed 13 penalties for 112 yards 58 of those yards on five pass-interference violations which helped set' up two Nebraska touchdowns. "Vere the officials calling' them loo tight?" Mc-Ka'y was asked. "I'm bet-teroff not saying," he said, smiling thinly. He was asked about the controversial Jimmy Jones-to-Gary Orcutt pass good for 20 yards which took the Trojans within 10 yards of the touchdown that made the score 21-7 shortly before halftime.

The controversy centered on whether Jones had stepped beyond the scrimmage line (the Nebraska 39) to release the ball on a third-and-12 play. penalty flags were dropped, and the Nebraska players argued heatedly with the officials. "All I can say is that the play was very close," said McKay. "I'm not sure he wasn't over (the line of scrimmage)." McKay said the Trojans' offensive and defensive lines were "only fair," pointing out that tackles John Vella (virus) and Al Cowlings (bruised 1 g) had to sit out much of the game. "Our offensive line was all right, I guess, but we stunk protecting the passer.

Maybe that might be detracting from Nebraska too much and I don't to do that. I figured they'd be tough defensively and they were." Defenders Disappointed End Jimmy Gunn and tackle Todv Smith, members of USC's Wild Bunch, the defensive front five, were disappointed at their performance. "There was a lot of confusion out there," said Gunn, the senior A 1 1-America prospect. "It was our first game together and it showed." Said Smith, the kid brother of the Baltimore Colts' Bubba, after his Trojan debut: "I played my worst game. I guess it's tough to lay off two years and come back.

(He was a freshman at Michigan State, then transferred and red-shirt-ed last year). They were double teaming us and we made mistakes. But we're gonna we better. We haven't even started. We'll be better, without a doubt." Meanwhile, coach Bob Devaney of the Cornhuskers complained about his defensive unit, which gave up 326 yards in total offense.

"We've got to get tougher on defense then we were," he said. "You just can't give up 31 points and win many games. Southern Cal made the big play too often on third down, and those two bornbs killed us. You just can't let 'em do that." All-Big Eight defensive halfback Dana Stephenson, who wa3 beaten by Bob Chandler (for a 45-yard TD) and Sam Dicker-son (for a 42-yard pass to set up a TD) said he played the "worst game" of his career.
