The Dodgers, for example, occupy a stadium with much longer foul lines than those at the club's former home park in Brooklyn. The Giants, Cardinals, Senators and Athletics also are playing in bigger parks than they used to. The Pirates, Phillies and Reds have larger parks under construction.

So any comparison of today's home run hitters and yesterday's is invalid on the face of it. So far as singles, doubles and triples are concerned, the move to larger ballparks should have an opposite effect. The larger the outfield, the more area the outfielder has to cover and the more he will be unable to cover. So the non-home-run hitter benefits. Actually, making bigger ballparks accomplishes essentially the same thing as widening the field.

It creates more air ground in the outfield. Are those who oppose flared-out foul lines also opposed to today's larger stadiums? There are still more reasons that baseball records of Ihis generation cannot be compared accurately with those of previous generations. Improved equipment is one. Fielders used to wear gloves barely half the size of those used today. Obviously, if you give the fielder better equipment, the batter will suffer.

Entertainment Is the Key ight baseball is also thought by many to have had an adverse effect on hitters. Further, many argue that the art of pitching has improved considerably in the last generation. For all these, reasons, it is foolish to suggest that anything even approaching a valid comparison can be made between today's performances and yesterday's. As for the widened-field idea, I have never kept track of the number of balls that barely went foul on a conventional field (and would be fair balls on the widened field). So I have no idea how much the wider field would increase offensive action.

But it surely can't hurt to experiment at the minor ieague level. It seems here that baseball's objective should not be, to present a game that may be measured in every detail against games played 50 years ago. It should be to present a game that will entertain today. Polls show that baseball fans on the average are older than pro football and basketball fans. What that tells you is that baseball has not been catching as many, young fans as it should.
