Energy and Fire Beethoven's "Appassiona- ta" Sonata was on' the whole rather too purposeful.

Miss Fuschi knew exactly what she was after, and she had the energy and fire to carry it through on a big scale. But in the process it lost some-thing of the mystery and brooding drama that Beethoven put into the music. There was much to admire and to. hold the attention, but by and large it was just a bit too efficient and not sufficiently imaginative. The same reservations be applied to Chopin's Fantasy in Minor; the only exception one could make was that it did not quite No more exotic places or stranger moralities have ever reached came a bravura display that any pianist would be proud to claim.

All of the pianist's' best qualities converged on the closing Sonata No. 3 of Pro- kofieff. Jorge Bolet Plays Gliopiri With Gusto When a pianist schedules the four "Ballades" by Cho pin for one sitting, he auto matically puts himself into the big league. Played in nu merical sequence, as Jorge Bolet played them in Bev erly Hills High School Audi torium for the Beverly Hills Music Association Saturday night, they are like one Huge sonata witn the most im probable musical and tech meal problems in every movement. As a pianist of great en ergy and even greater re serves of power, Mr. Bolet had what it took. He gave unstintmgly from the outset and was still going strong at the end, after having encom-i passed nearly the entire gamut of Chopin's pianistic palette.

Great Tone Color The only attributes some what lacking in Mr. Bolet's interpretations were a sense of lyricism and certain in flections of warmth and mel lowness. But his technical equipment was always im pressive, as was the variety of tone, color, his control of dynamics, the grand sweep ii which he outlined the form, and the scintillating range of his flashing passage work. The fragility of Mozart's Sonata in Major, K. 576, Esemed constantly in danger of being shattered under the impact of Mr.

But it had moments of charm in the, Chopinesque slow move-mentand strong brilliance when speed was part of the composer's intention. And the addi tional tact that sne is as pretty as a Hollywood starlet is not going to hurt her career at all. But Miss Fuschi has more capital in her bank than good looks. She has, a flair for her instrument, and a secure and poised command! of it.

There were no uncer-1 tainties and no, wavering; everything obviously came off precisely as had planned it. Even when a light bulb exploded and showered the with glass in the middle of the slow movement of a Mozart Sonata her aplomb was equal to the occasion and not a note fell by. the wayside. Definite Ideas Valuable as this kind of poise is, it also has certain drawbacks. Miss Fuschi has clear and definite ideas about her music and they were always interesting but they were also sometimes a shade over-calculated.

This is bet ter, of course, than trusting to luck, but it precluded the sort of freedom and spon taneity that with more ex left today. "Funerailles" was built up beautifully from the subdued, slow beginning to the tremendous double-oc tave climax which finishes the piece. The "Un Sospiro" Etude sounded as though Mr. Bolet were caressing the music in the palm of his hand, and. the "Mephisto whirled and swirled in dizzying rounds to an ex hausted halt.
