Page 13- December 1944 THE AUSTIN AMERICAN '1 REAL ESTATE Longhorns Begin 1944-'45 Basketball Season Here Against Ready for iVlarootnis Childress Air Field Thursday The Texas Longhorns will launch their 1944-45 basketball schedule Thursday night against the Childress army air field team at Gregory gym, then come back the next night against the Southwestern Pirates. Coach Bully Gilstrap Tuesday said he had decided on a line- up ior me opening game to jnciuue home Saturday, The Maroons, who wound up an undefeated and untied district season two weeks ago at KeTville to clinch the Dist. 15-AA championship, are heavily favored to win their bi-district round against the Valley champs, who lost by top-heavy scores to Thomas Jefferson (San Antonio) and Kerrville, Dist. 15 teams. Indications Tuesday were that the Lambertmen will be without the services of one of their most efficient ground-gainers, George Photo, Friday night.

Photo re-injured a knee hurt in the Corpus Christi game here and Lambert indicated the No. 1 tailback will be left at home, where the extra days of treatment may ready his knee for action against Port Arthur next week. Photo's absence will bring up a starting backfield combination of Buddy Frey at quarterback, Waddy Collins at tailback, Biliy Bussey at wingback and Wrilton Davis at full -the same unit that started and performed well against the Tivy Antlers at Kerrville. All Maroon starters save Photo will be ready, Lambert indicated. his only two lettermen, a former freshman player, an early-'44 squad-man and a navy transfer from SMU.

Tall Robert "Rosebud" Summers and blond, lefthanded Joe Crowley are the veterans. They were regulars on last winter's quintet which tied for third place in the Southwest conference. Don Wooten, flashy little guard off the '41 freshman team, directs the Longhorns floor game and is a dangerous shot from any distance. Bob Cleary. who gave up basketball after a fair start last year is teamed with Summers "in the hole" under the basket.

Stan Graner, who was a starter part of last season at SMU, completes the lineup. By positions, it is: Cleary and Graner, forwards: Summers, center; Wooten and Crowley, guards. Only Summers is above average in height, indicating that Texas again will be handicapped around both baskets. Reporting this week were several members of the football squad, including three ends Herbert Bech-tol, Jimmy Watson and Charley Ta-tom. However, Bechtol, a naval trainee, has not yet received permission to play basketball.

Watson, who came to the state tournament last year with Midland, looks to be a good prospect. Bechtol play, ed for Texas Tech in '44. Miami Tournament To Start Thursday MIAMI, Dec. 3. (m With a triumphant air, Tournament Director H.

H. Arnold ruffled through the entry list for the 21st annual $10,000 Miami open Tuesday, and observed: "It's the best balanced field we've ever had," Arnold wasn't boasting out loud, but obviously he felt that the city of Miami had scored a victory with its decision to hold the tournament, which begins Thursday, in conflict with a Pacific coast schedule arranged by the Professional Golfers association. "We'll have 160 to 165 starters," the director continued, "and there are 20 players in the field with a chance to win." He rattled off the names of Johnny Revolta, Henry Picard, Gene Sarazen, Tommy Armour, Ed Dudley, Tony Penna, Johnny Bulla, Frank Walsh, Gene Kunes, Steve Warga. Ziggy Mellon. Walter Work, Johnny Gibson Al Nelson, Felix Serafin, Joe Kirkwood, Herman Barron, Willie Klein, Peter Cooper and Eddie Burke.

FOOTBALLS VOLLEY BALLS RUBBER Valley city for joust Friday night with the Dist. 16-AA champion. Coach Standard Lambert scheduled only a mild session for Wednesday, last night at home for his Army Wins Lambert Grid Trophy NEW YORK, Dec. 5.

(UP) By a unanimous vote, Army's overpowering football team won the August V. Lambert memorial trophy Tuesday, to rank as the top eleven in the east for the 1944 season. All of the sports writers and broadcasters who participated in a telegraphic poll to select the team voted for Army to succeed Navy's Midshipmen, who won the honor in 1943 It was the first time Army had won the trophy. Pittsburgh took it in 1939 and 1937 as did Boston college in 1940 and 1942. Other winners were Carnegie Tech in 1938.

Cornell in 1939, and Fordham in 1941. The team will receive the trophy here Dec. 18. Randolph, Army Lead Grid Clubs Notre Dame Gridders Ousted From Top NEW YORK. Dee.

5. (IP) Army is the best football team in the collegiate world and the unbeaten Randolph Field Fliers from Texas hold a similar honor among the service teams, 121 sports critics throughout the country decided Tuesday. Voting in the final weekly Associated Press football poll of the season the newspapermen listed the cadets as the best eleven on 95 ballots and ranked the Texas Fliers, selected as one of the Oil Bowl teams Tuesday, tops on 17. Ohio State, which also was unbeaten and annexed the Big Ten crown, was first on five and one was marked for the Iowa Pre-Flight aggregation. In the tabulation Army was first with 1,165 points, followed by Ohio State with 941.

Randolph Field, Navy, Bainbridge, Iowa Seahawks, Southern California, Michigan, Notre Dime and the Fourth Air Force completed the first ten. Navy skidded from second to fourth after its 23-to-7 beating by the cadets. One of the few remaining games of the season sends Randolph Field against the Fourth Air Force this weekend. A purely collegiate first ten would have Duke. Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Illinois among the elite while a grouping of only service teams would be made up of Randolph, Bainbridge, Iowa Pre-Flight, Great Lakes, Fort Pierce, St Mary's Pre-Flight and the Second Air Force.

Army replaced Notre Dame, 1943 champion, at the top. 2 UT Stars In East-West Tilt Two University of Texas senior stars. Center Jack Sachse and Guard Harold Fischer, Tuesday accepted bids to play in the East-West charity football game at San Francisco New Year's day, according to an announcement by Percy Locey, business manager of the West team. Four other West players' acceptances also were announced: Bob Waterfield, UCLA quarterback; Roger Harding, University of California center; Ed Schneider, Denver guard, and Bob McClure, University of Nevada tackle. Sachse and Fischer closed three-year careers at Texas last Thursday when they played prominent roles in the Longhorns' 6-0 victory over Texas Sachse has been a unanimous all-Southwest conference choice to date, while Fischer has made some teams and likely would have made others except that he played in the backfield most of the season.

'Sold Out' Sign Posted For Rose Bowl Game PASADENA, CaL Dec. 5. (INSl The "sold out" sign was posted Tuesday in the Rose Bowl ticket office and officials announced that all of the seats available to the general public for the New Year's Day football game between the University of Tennessee and Southern California had been over-subscribed. Southern California graduate Manager Arnold Eddy said that more than sufficient applications to fill the 93,000 seats had been received in a week and the additional applications would be returned. The Tennessee USC game set the all-time Rose Bowl attendance The Austin high school Maroona Tuesday afternoon neared the end of a somewhat lengthy practice grind looking to the coming bi-district football engagement with Mc Allen.

The Maroons travel to the Navigators Beat Carriers, 57-52 San Marcos Takes Thrilling Game Here The Bergstrom Field Troop Cut-rierg lost their second basketball game in as many starts when they dropped a thriller to the San Marcos Navigators Tuesday night, 87 to 52. Play was fairly calm in the first quarter that ended 13 to 7 in the Troop Carriers' favor. In the second quarter Coach Norman Sanders sent in his second team but they were unable to handle the tough Navigators and it was necessary to return the first stringers. The first team battled the San Marcos boys evenly and the half ended 24 to 23 in favor of Bergstrom. The second half was veritable nightmare of scoring, the teams alternated in making basket.

Never did more than four points separate the contenders. Cole of the Navigators was the big gun in their offense. HU 26 points nullified any efforts made by the Troop Carriers' scoring attack. Bill Staiger led the Bergstrom attack with 17 points. He was closely followed by Jimmy Flanagan with 13 markers and Paul Faris with 11.

Faris left the game in the third period as a result of five personal fouls. Points from the free throw line made the victory possible for the San Marcos boys. They made 11 of them good out of 14 attempts. The Troop Carriers made 14 out of 22. BERGSTROM ISAN MARCOS ig ft.

They've gained a big following in their two previous trips to El Paso." SOONER TIRV DOWN Sf BOWL BID NORMAN Dec.

5. PV Dale Arbuckle, University of Oklahoma athletic director, said Tuesday the Sooners "reluctantly turned down" a bid to play in the Sun Bowl football game Jan. 1 at El Paso, Texas. Arbuckle said the decision was reached after a consultation at which Capt. John F.

Donelson, University Naval ROTC commandant, ruled trainees might not make the trip under the 48-hour regulation. "Besides." Arbuckle added, "we have reached our season's objective, the winning of the Big Six conference title, and our squad is tired from its long 10-game slate." Sporting News Picks 'Player of Year' ST. (IP) The fledgling Oil Bowl, making its second stab in the post-season football show, may come up with the No.

1 game of the country. The Randolph Field Ramblers, undefeated and untied and ranked No. 3 in the national poll, were obtained Tuesday to appear in the Oil Bowl on Jan. 1. Officials admittedly were looking toward Norman.

for the naval Zoomers, also undefeated and untied, to oppose the mighty Ramblers. They said they had received no word from the navy yet and if the Zoomers are not permitted to play would seek another air force team. Permission for Randolph Field to participate was approved by the war department and formal announcement made Tuesday that the Ramblers had been granted permission to participate in the post-season classic. Randolph Field departs Wednes day morning in a swing to the west coast to meet March Field (Fourth Airforce) Sunday, then will return Monday to the home base to remain a day before going to New York to meet the Second Airforce in a war bond show Dec. 16.

Randolph Field and the Norman Zoomers have played college as well as service teams in the Southwest and South, the Ramblers beating Texas. Southern Methodist and Rice of the Southwest conference and trimming Maxwell Field and the Third Airforce while rolling to nine straight victories, during which they scored 408 points to 6 for the opposition. The Zoomers defeated Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma and also downed the Second Airforce. Such a game would match two of the nation's greatest backs Len Eshmont of the Zoomers and Bill Dudley of Randolph field. Eshmont was an All-American in service football last year while with Del Monte Pre-flight.

Dudley was an All-American at Virginia University and also starred in professional ranks. The Oil Bowl was inangurated last Jan. 1 with Southwester Louisiana Institute defeating Arkansas Holly Brock, chairman of the Oil Bowl committee, said Tuesday "we expect to announce Randolph field's opponetns within a day or two." While Houston went ahead with its Oil Bowl classic, one other projected bowl game in Texas was abandoned for 1945. That was the Alamo Bowl at San Antonio. Carl C.

Krueger of the San Antonio chamber of commerce said inability to arrange a "first class" postseason game was the reason why this game was postponed until Jan. 1, 1946. NAVY TEAM IN DOUBT ABOUT OIL BOWL GAME NORMAN, Dec. Capt. W.

UP) Southwest conference football may have been down in quality but it was up in interest during the season just closed, attendance figures from the six member schools showed Tues- da'- The gain was 41 per cent as more than in 1943 paid their way into the stadiuma to one on the closest gridiron race in history. In 31 home games this year the conference members drew 332,514.

Last season in 29 home game the total was 235.859. The upward trend wai accomplished this season despite bad weather that crippled attendance at the major game of the year for Texas Christian's championship Horned Frogs that with Texas and the Southern Methodist-Arkansas contest at Dallas. Threatening weather that finally broke into rain also held down attendance at Houston for the TCU-Eice game that decided the conference championship. The biggest gain was shown by Rice with 131.000 in nine games compared to 57.600 last year in lix. The average this year was larger than last and Rice would have shown a gain had it played no more home games than in 1943.

Texas was up almost 40.000 for the same number of games each year and Southern Methodist showed a gain of almost 8.000. Arkansas, Texas and Texas Christian were down. Texas decrease, however, was attributable to the fact that the Agies played their annual game with bitter rival Texas away from home.
