He completed the preliminary screen adaptation of "Alexander the Conqueror" for Producer Frank Ross before Ross left with Joan Caulfield for Europe and immediately thereafter launched on the new subject which outdoes the story of Sgt York. "Tiger by the Tail" Js'the documented, if little-known, narrative about the young lieutenant from Ashtabula, 0., who Tsinglehandedly, as Andrews says, surrounded and raptured 20,000 enemy soldiers without firing a single shot. This was one of the freak events of World War II and Andrews first became acquainted with the unique saga through Barney Old-field, formerly at Warners, and now information chief for the Air Defense Command stationed at Ent Air Base, Colorado Springs. Magill is back in the service as a captain. I understand MGM has asked for a first chance at the story, though Andrews asserts he will make no commitments until a factual article is first printed in a national weekly, about which arrangements have been started.

AUDREY IULTON' TO ENACT RUTH IV 'PRODIGAL' Audrey Dalton has signed for the stellar role of Ruth, first and last love of the title character, in "The Prodigal." Lonny Chapman will arrive today from New York to portray Roy, the card dealer, in "East of Eden." He is another of the New York stage actors recruited by Director Elia for this picture. He appeared during the past season in "Ladies of the Corridor" and was earlier in "Mister Roberts' and "Come Back, Little Sheba." DOUGLAS TEAMING WITH SUIX1VAX FORECAST Writh Bryna Productions and Batjac Productions reputedly to join forces in the filming of "The Quality of Mercy" there seems to be a potential deal for Barry Sullivan to appear as costar with Kirk Douglas.

Sullivan, of course, has committed himself for a year to "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial," so the film will have to be held back until Jie is free, provided he is secured. An unusual purchase involves the Crime Club novel, "Follow as the Night," by Pat McGerr, and simultaneously spotlights Danielle Darrieux as the star of the forthcoming movie version. E.G.E. Films has acquired the rights and Miss Darrieux's husband, Henri Decoin, will produce. It is quite exceptional for a French outfit to buy an American book for the screen.

Tony Martinez and his instrumental Quintet have been gaining high approval for the work they did with Connie Moore and by themselves in the Masquers Revel. PETER USTINOV PLANNING TO DIRECT Peter Ustinov, who has signed for one film annually at 120th, expresses the belief that he will be able to assume the directorial mantle under this contract. Now at Paramount Play Season Spontaneous interruptions of applause by a crowded house greeted the opening performance of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" at the Tustin Playbox. Heading the well-chosen cast was Cathy Browne as the ethe real Elvira, while Montgom ery Reed turned in an excel lent performance as the bewildered husband who becomes "a sort of astral bigamist" through the materialization of his deceased first wife. Orange County summer thea ter audiences are accustomed to the hilarious characteriza tions created by Wilmot I.

Stewart, and she returned this season to delight her fans with a colorful version of Madame Arcati, the "professional" spir itualist. Actrs Returns Joining the company after a season's absence was Jeanne Brown, who gave a fine per formance as Ruth, the second wife who eventually becomes a second blithe spirit. Completing the cast are Phil ip Moore, Nancy Bradley and Elizabeth Robbins, Codirec- tors were Dianne Delaire and Henri Ficher. Cathy Browne and Sherwood Price produced. Preceding the premiere of the season, E.

Hevden. ARROW IN DUST elr. (HilM THURS.JUNE24,1954 Portn lably will have a certain som nambulist quality. Cause of the spectator drowsi ness is not rudeness; it is just axiomatic that when a human being is seated in a comfortable chair in near-total darkness and nothing is offered to distract him, sleep results. Elusive Qualities All this is not to say that "Silver Lode, which stars Dan Duryea, Lizabeth Scott and John Payne, has no certain elu sive qualities.

It does. For one thing, it is the first western in recent recollection where all reason (except one's knowledge' of Hollywood casting techniques) tells you that Payne is the rat (Duryea says so several times) and Duryea is the good guy (hardly anyone, however, suggests this). For 80 minutes, more or less, we struggle against our fickle senses in an effort to reconcile the plot. Then, presto, Director Allan Dwan and Author Karen DeWolf reconcile it for us. Lizabeth Star The female star of "Silver Lode" is Lizabeth Scott, who thankfully does nothing to break the comforting absence of emotion.

As Payne's fiancee she carries on 33 well as can be expected with the material at hand. A kind mention should be made of Dolores Moran, as a sort of hard-bitten ingenue (if such an anomaly is possible) through whose efforts justice is finally done in the end. The plot, which hangs by a thread, needn't be gone into here, but it has nothing to do with "silver," nor does it have anything to do with a "lode" not to say, "load." D. Richard Garrick, celebrating 53 years as an actor, wins a comedy role in "Many Rivers to Cross" at MGM. He appeared with Maude Adams and coached John Barrymore for his debut during his theatrical career. Luce Aubertin, who has been appearing as a blond spy in "Heels Go to Hell" (freely translated title) at the Grand Guignol in Paris, will appear as a spy in "The Big Whisper," Virginia Van Upp film for Republic. for "We're No Angels," he is going to England to present either his own play, "The Empty Chair," or a revival of an old French play, "Clem-bard." Neville Brand is the actor now sought for "Desperate Hours," written by Joseph Hayes when this is produced on the stage this fall by the author and Howard Erskine. His role will have a resemblance to "Riot in Cell Block 11" if he plays it.

He will be seen as the leader of convicts in a prison break. Raymond Burr is being sought as the Sheriff. TODAY! 2 SHOWS 7:00 10:00 6 PM PM Sat. SI. 49 $1,791 prise km.
