MAY CO'S 17 STORE COLORFUL JANUARY EVENTS PLANNED AT LEAGUE MEETING Cordon Barrett was elected president of the Southern California Chess League for 1970. Benton James is vice-president. Other officers elected at. the recent meeting were; Larry Hoke, treasurer; Douglas Linn, secretary; Donald Cotton, tournament director, and Henry Shipin, assistant tournament director.

The major activity of the league is the organization of the annual club team matches, which will start on March 1. All clubs in the area may enter teams in one or more divisions. Division 1 matches will be rated, and all players must, belong to or join the U.S. Chess Federation. This can be done through their clubs.

Rating is not essential for the other divisions, but may be done on an individual match basis, if both captains agree. Morphy Day, which has been celebrated by the league for many years, will be held on Saturday, May 9, at a site to be announced. Varied activities for all chess players will be featured. Prizes for the winners of the team matches will be awarded that day, as well as the plaque to the person elected to the league Hall of Fame. The Merit Award Point program, started last year, will be continued.

Merit points are earned, by players who exceed thefr expected performances in an event. MAP winner for 1969 was Ross Stoutenborough of Riverside. The league will again run an Expert Candidates Tournament, with five round preliminaries at various member clubs, and finals over the weekend of June 13 and 14. The next, meeting for team captains will be on Thursday evening. Feb.

Plans have been approved, and the match, with 10 The West European Zonal, held in Praia de Rocha, Portugal, was no exception to the rule. It was by no means the strongest of the series, with only four grandmasters among the 18 participants. With 15 countries represented, several ambitious young players, hitherto unknown in the international arena, were more than ready to challenge the established stars. As a result the top positions were not determined until the very end. The three qualifiers finally turned out to be among the pre- tournament favorites, grandmasters Filip of Czechoslovakia and Gligoric of Yugoslavia, and international master Minic of Yugoslavia.

Each scored 12V-4V2. Filip had the easiest time, leading from the start. He could afford to draw his last six games after an impressive eight wins and three draws in the earlier rounds. Gligoric, on the other hand, lost to Mariotti of Italy, and had only 3-3 after six rounds. He caught up by winning his next six games in succession.

Mariotti was the real sensa-tion of the tournament, also defeating Grandmaster Bo-botsov of Bulgaria. He fi-nished in third place with 12-5, but could easily have done better, since he blundered in winning positions against Donnelly of South Africa and Schumacher of Belgium. Bobotsov tied for fifth with Levy of Scotland, each with llW-5. Levy, the only player besides Filip not to lose a game, earned the title of international master along with Mariotti, bv scoring better than 66 23. Bilek of Hungary, the fourth grandmaster, finished with The following games are from the tournament.

CHESS OSCAR For the second year the Association of International Chess Journalists, of which this writer is a member, met in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, during the grandmaster tournament, there last month. A major result of the deliberations was a list of the 10 best players of the year. The overwhelming winner was newly crowned champion of the world, Boris Spassky of the USSR. Second and third places were also awarded to Soviet stars, Victor Korchnoi and former world champion Ti-gran Petrosian.

Fourth on the list and Jpader of the "rest of the world" (see above) was Bent Larsen, who had won the top award for 19BS. Others of the honored group were: Lev Polugaev-sky, Viastimil Hort, Lajos Portisch, Vassily Smyslov, Eufim Geller and Svetozar Gligoric. Bobhy Fischer, who probably would have made the list in any year in which he participated, did not play a single' match or tournament game in 1969, ZONAL IX PORTUGAL The Zonal Tournaments, held in 10 areas around the world, always produce keen competition.
