BUI Pullinsi will follow "Cabaret" at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse with "Hello Dolly" opening Aug. l. And it was 20 years ago this Friday that Pullinsi, as an 18-year-old college freshman in Washington, D.C., revolutionized regional theater with the first dinner theater. THAT ATTRACTIVE woman hovering around Mikhail Baryihnlkoy during his stay here for the International Dance Festival at the Opera House was none other than "King Kong" star Jessica Lange. After Sunday's final performance, the young couple sped away to Michael Butler' Oak Brook estate for some badly needed rest end privacy.

Burns Roy Scheider (Inset) coes shark hunting again to destroy the Great White that's threatenlna Cindy Grover In this scene from "Jaws 2." JUST AS "GREASE" is compelling only when its main star, John Travolta, is on the screen, "Jaws 2" is worth watching only when its leading player is on camera. According to the credits, actor Roy Scheider is the leading star of "Jaws 2." Yet Scheider, a strong actor, isn't the leading player of "Jaws 2." It's the shark.

At a recent preview screening of "Jaws 2," the audience hissed when the shark failed to make an expected lethal entrance at the beginning of the picture. The audience was primed for mayhem. After the original "Jaws" opened to record business in 1975, many other films featuring a variety of killer animals were produced. But none has had the impact of "Jaws." Let's face it: There's something special about that shark. It's a full-blown movie star, now with two flicks under its fin.

THE NEW FILM picks up the original story four years later. The New England vacation village of Amity is trying to pick itself up off the economic floor. All those battles with a Great White shark have forced vacationeers to swim clear of Amity. Robert Shaw, who played Quint the shark killer in the original "Jaws," died at the end of the first picture, so he isn't in the sequel. Richard Dreyfuss, the fish expert in the original, didn't want to appear in the sequel, at any price.

Only Scheider, the police chief, and his wife (Lorraine Gary), the mayor (Murray Hamilton), and Hendricks (Jeffrey Kramer), remain from the original project The story of the sequel in simple: Another Great White shark begins killing swimmers and boaters near Amity, just as a major Amity condominium deal is about to be completed. Once again, the mayor of the village doesn't want to shut down the beaches for fear of queering the town's economy. This, of course, is unbelievable because the same attitude cost many lives four years earlier. the film was completed around Christmas, one director had been fired and another had gotten Into a fistfight with actor Scheider. As in the first picture, the mechanical shark (dubbed "Bruce" for the first film) was torn apart by electrolysis arid by the strong ocean currents.

And yet the shark never has looked better. "Jaws 2" does entertain because the shark looks good. Even though we know that this is a mechanical model, frequently it looks real. To watch an audience react wildly to "Jaws 'ii A rf Mi "Jaws 2" turns out to be a mano a mano between Scheider and the shark. The script suggests' that sharks talk to each other and that the word was passed la the Atlantic Ocean shark beds that Scheider should be nailed for killing one of their, brothers.

But before the film's jrand finale of head-to-snout combat, we are treated to a number of shark attacks at the rate of about one every 15 to 20 minutes. The objects of most of the attacks are Amity Island teen-agers busy sailing instead of working during their summer vacations. FRANKLY. THERE Isn't much more to the picture than that The teen-agers in the film are at their most Interesting when they are screaming for their lives. When they are not being attacked, "Jaws 2" offers teen-age action even less inspired than "Beach Blanket Bingo." These kids splash about in the small sailboats, throwing water-filled balloons at couples busy making out Wow.

Considering all of the problems "Jaws 2" encountered during its production last fall, it should come as no surprise there isn't much on the screen other than the shark attacks. Before Third Kind" Instead, was a solid piece of action filmmaking. Its nonshark action was bolstered by a vivid performance by Dreyfuss, who ener- fizes every film in which he appears, and by haw, who in some ways was just as fearsome as the shark he was trying to capture. "Jaws 2," by comparison, is empty. Scheider does his pained, tight-lipped number very well.

But the day after you see "Jaws 2," you won't remember anything but the shark attacks. For a film about a deep-water terror, "Jaws 2" is really quite shallow. FILM NOTES: Parents who kept their children away from the first "Jaws" may be wondering if they should do the same for "Jaws 2." It's hard to advise parents, but the new film, to me, appears to be less bloody and more silly. currently is director of elections in County Clerk Stanley Kusper'i office. DICK GRASSFIELD snared several boxes of Pop Rocks that he'll give awav to Youngsters at his 2" is to wonder what is the source of this attraction to a shark. Frankly, I can't improve upon the theories expressed during the success of the first picture namely, that the shark is some kind of primal threat, shrouded in phallic fear, attacking man and woman when they are at their most vulnerable in an alien environment: water. AS TO HOW "Jaws 2" compares to the' original, there is no comparison. The original, directed by Steven Spielberg, who rejected the sequel and made "Close Encounters of the Gene Sskel regularly reviews the movie scene at 5 and 10 p.m. on Channel 2 News.
