MIAMI (AP) Unlimited hydroplane driver George "Skip" Walther, brother of race car driver David "Salt" Watther, was killed at Miami Marine Stadium Sunday when his thunderboat went out of control and flipped several times at a speed of about 150 miles an hour. Walther, 27, was to be a replacement driver for the owner of the hydro, Jim McCormick, who was thrown from the speed craft earlier in the week and suffered severely lacerated legs.

WALTHER, a rookie, was on a trial run before the start of an annual $30,000 unlimited regatta at the stadium. His wife Sandy was in the stands at the time of the accident. She accompanied her fatally injured husband to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from skull fractures, a severed right arm and other lacerations. Rookie Howie Beans, driving Miss Budweiser, won the regatta just hours after Walther's death, Benns, 35, of Grand Island, N.Y., guided the 30-foot, Rolls Royce powered craft to an average of 100.87 miles an hour to accumulate 1,000 points and earn Second place went to Dannie Wells of Bellvue, in Justapest with Miss Madison, driven by E. Milner Irvin of Miami, third.

Defending national champion Pay 'N Pak, finished fourth. Referee Bill Newton of the Unlimited Racing Commission said a preliminary inspection indicated "a sudden failure of the rudder attachment structure" but that the exact cause of the failure was unknown at the present time. HIS BROTHER, Dave "Salt" Walther, was severely burned and injured in the crash of his racing car during the Indianapolis 500 auto race last year. Salt, who also pilots hydroplane boats, made a comeback this year, finishing 17th at Indianapolis. Lew Matuso, spokesman for the regatta, said the boat driven by Walther, which was named the "Red Man," had once belonged to the Walther family but had been sold to McCormick recently.

McCormick, who required almost 300 stitches to close his wounds, turned it over to Skip Walther to drive after McCormick's accident Thursday. Walther was the third driver killed at the Miami Marine Stadium since it opened in 1963. It is on a causeway linking the city to Key Biscayne, where President Nixon maintains a home. METHOD CLUBFACE ALIGNMENT DETERMINES TAKEAWAY PATH The direction you club is facing after you've set it behind the ball affects the direction in whkh you wilt move it away from the ball. If your dub face is looking to the left of the target line (illustration you will tend to move it back outside that line.

This can cause several different swing errors. If your clubface looks right of the target line (illustration you will be inclined to move it inside the line abruptly. Preferably you will face your club directly down the line (illustration This alignment will give you the ideal takeaway with the clubhead moving straight back from the ball for a few inches before finally swinging to the inside. i NATV Massillon area does well on race tracks Massillon area drivers finished second and third in the feature events in racing action at the Canton Motor and Midvale Speedways Saturday. Andretti had won the feature race pole position, racing the Vels-Parnelli Racing Team Viceroy-Lola. He did it with a record-setting 100.138 miles per hour in winning the 21-lap heat race. His time has been surpassed by only Mark Dcnohue, That effort came in 1972 when Donohue averaged 101.409 miles per hour in a 5.4-liter turbocharged Porsche 917 Can- Am car. ANDRETTI TOOK the lead going into the first turn of 2.4- mile circuit and held it for 24 laps before yielding the lead to Redman when a front bearing failed. In a post-race interview Redman said he has severed his relationship with the UOP Shadown Formula One team on the Grand Prix Circuit because he chooses to compete in less demanding types of machinery.

David Hobbs suffered minor bums in the pre-race warm-up when his engine blew and he was spattered with hot water and oil. He finished fourth while Canadian Eppie Wtetzes was third in a Lola T-332 similar to the Redman and Andretti cars. The Chicago Black Hawks lost the least games 14 during the National Hockey League season. But they finished second to Philadelphia in the West Division. Chicago led in tie games with 23.
