Amidst all the current pop nostalgia for the 50s, Elvis "Presley and the Classic Thunderbirds are about the only timeless survivors of that era. Like Miss West herself he's become an American institution, and this highly enjoyable film does a good job of reminding us that he has. KEVIN THOMAS I MOVIE REVIEWS 'vjapahiese'. I Classics at Royal BY KEVIN THOMAS Tlmti Itaff Writer One by one the films of the late Yasujiro Ozu and the late Kenji Mizoguchl, both all-time great direc- tors, are gradually getting the wider chculation they, so richly deserve, thanks largely to distributor Dan Talbot of New Yorker Films.

The latest to surface, at p. the Royal in West L.A., are Ozu's "Late Spring" (1949) and- Mizoguchi's "Princess Yang Kwei Fei" (1955), his first film in col-k. or. TIMES READER'S DIGEST -NATIONAL OBSERVER IMert edfonl Red! takes place in the South, Elvis' home ground, and this may help account for the fact that there's lots more easygoing warmth and lots less glib slickness than in those Vegas appearances that formed the core of "Elvis That's the Way It Is." Both offstage and on Presley comes across as an assured, relaxed, thoroughgoing pro who knows exactly what he's doing and enjoys it immensely. 'Glory, Glory' Most of Presley's dynamically performed numbers again in those razzle-dazzle Bill Belew jumpsuits are the hits current at the time of filming, but a standout is a LAST 2 DAYS FABULOUS FILM FESTIVAL a movie tm GREATS 7 MAVAII FINFMfNTS IN 10VE" "VOUNC PASSIONS" "I CURIOUS TAHITI" IMS.IM.-Tri.m-M4 101 dORII-Oe. From Warner Bros A Wdrner Communications Company :4 mm Tlmti Stiff Wrlttr "Elvis on Tour" (at various theaters) is as unpretentious as its title and therefore, lots more enjoyable than the 1970 Presley documentary, "Elvis That's the Way It Is." That's because Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel, who also made the Joe Cocker film "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" for Metro, don't pretend they're providing in-depth cine-ma-verite revelations contrary to what some studio press releases would lead you to believe. Great Shape Last April the young film-makers and their 10 cameramen hit the road with Presley on a 15-day, 15 one-night-stand tour that began in Buffalo and wound up in Albuquerque. Elvis in performance at various places is punctuated with brief backstage glimpses, a couple of photos from the family album, a clip from an early TV appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, some very brief remarks from Presley's father and Presley himself, saying how his daddy thought he'd be better off an electrician than a guitar player.

That's almost the gamut of the inside stuff. But what's up front is made to count full measure. Presley is in fine voice and great shape and, as the very stylish film amply reveals, still a devastating sex symbol to ladies from eight to 80. J. A.

Yang Kwei Fei." Yet in i hi's infinitely skillful hands what could have been but a sad fairy tale becomes a sublime romantic tragedy. Based on a classic tale in Chinese literature, this sumptuous film is the story of the Cinderella-like rise of a scullery maid (Machiko Kyo, exquisite as a Kwan Yin) to the gilded court of a gentle, kindly emperor (Masayuki Mori). It's clear from the start, however, that this couple is never going to live happily ever after. Neglected Affairs That's because the emperor would rather compose on his, lute than attend to affairs of state, thus allowing his palace to become a hotbed of in-trigue. In no time at all the boldly ambitious pro-vincial military governor (So Yamamura) who discovered Kwei Fei and her own grasping relatives have exploited her new position to the extent that, coupled with the emperor's lassitude, China is brought to the brink of civil war.

Mizoguchl was as celebrated for his direction of actresses as George Cukor is, and the abiding concern in his films was the plight of women, which he expressed with overwhelm- ing compassion. So intense were his feelings that this film with its never-never land settings and story has as much impact as his starkly realistic dramas. 'Billy' in Multiples i "Dirty Little the Jack L.
