10-D LINCOLN SUNDAY JOURNAL AND STAK July 29, 1956 Foreign Market 'Blessed' by Flood of American TV American television is infiltrating to the far corners of the earth just as American movies have. The Siamese now have the blessings of Rin Tin Tin. The South Americans have the escapades of Corliss Archer. The Australians will shortly-television hasn't quite got under way Down Under yet--get their notions of American matrimony from "I Love Lucy." For good or ill, American influences will spout from dozens of TV stations the world over--and heaven knows where it will all end. For instance, Corliss Archer has got to be a great favorite in Latin America.

And what will that do to their teen-agers? In Latin America, no teen-age girl would be permitted anything like the freedom Corliss enjoys. Their teen-agers are chaperoned carefully until marriage. What happens when their teens discover Corliss can go bucketing around the countryside with any number of boy friends? A social revolution? Ziv, which markets Corliss, rather hopes not. They don't want to be held responsible. Tons Sold Ziv is now selling tons of American programs in foreign markets, ranging from Monaco to the Dominican Republic.

They now have shows in very Central and South American country which has television. They are programming over 860 half hours of American programs which have been dubbed into Spanish. "Cisco Kid" and "Highway neither of which have been exactly confused with great art, are two favorites all over Latin America. From these two, Radio, Television In Review By John Crosby Latin Americans could easily get the idea that Americans' two favorite occupations were killing one another in automobiles or chasing one another around the wide open spaces on horseback. Toward the end of this year, Australian television will get under way in Sydney and Melbourne.

There will be two commercial TV stations and one government TV station in each city and all six will go on the air at once. Colin Bednall, general manager of one of the commercial stations, passed through town shopping for American TV programs. He came rather late to the feast. His commercial opposition and the government station both rushed to America and furiously competed for American programs. Bednall decided to take his time, to wait until they'd spent all their money and he'd be the only Australian here with money to spend.

"What would you do if your oppo- land?" I wanted to know. I told him land?" he wanted to know. I told him that, if he found the answer to that one, to let the competing networks here in on the secret. They haven't found the answer yet. Successful American shows are sure to be a hit in Australia, Bednall thinks.

He bases this on their experience in radio and newspapers. Ninety-nine out of a hundred successful American newspaper features and radio programs also appeal to Australians. The British don't do nearly so well in these fields in Australia as we do. So Australian children will be watching American cowboys from infancy up. Bednall doubts that there will be any outcry from Australian parents.

"In Australia, it's accepted, even by do-gooders, that a child may suffer from another child's anguish or a ghost at.bedtime--but one cowboy shooting another is nothing." Not Much Culture Ziv is now selling programs in the Philippines, Germany, Jtaly, France, Luxembourg, England, and Switzerland--dubbed variously in Spanish, French, Italian and German (with Portuguese coming up.) Among the programs in these countries are "I Led Three Lives." "Favorite Story," "A Man Called "Science Fiction Theater," "Mr. District Attorney," Surgery Often Possible For Heart Patients Program Features Public Affairs George Bell Timmerman governor of South Carolina, will be interviewed by the Meet the Press panel over KFAB at 5:45 p.m. Drama The story of the first humane treatment of the insane will be told on Telephone Time at 4 p.m. port of success with the Beck op- At the recent meeting of the American Medical Association, Dr. B.

Once in Bogota, Columbia, a Ziv salesman showed two and a half hours of "Cisco Kid" and "Boston Blarkie" to the President and his ministers. Immediately thereafter, he was thrown into jail. The Ziv salesman didn't really think the shows were that bad and, as it turned out, that was not the issue. It seems some local character with influence has a nice little racket, shaking down foreign businessmen for 50 per cent of their profits. The alternative, jail.

In this case, the Ziv man got out of the hoosegow without paying a penny of extortion money. CopyiiEht, 1956, New York Herald Tribune Inc. Several faces familiar to you armchair viewers won't decorate the TV screens come September. Eve will continue "Our Miss Brooks" on CBS radio but the television series is finished except for syndication of the re-runs. Off CBS also will be "Navy Log," "Brave Eagle," 'F'our Star Playhouse," "I Re Mama," "It's Always Jan" (Janis Paige), and "Life With Father." Rushing in Replacements NBC has laid more serial shows to rest: "Medic" (although it may return next spring), "Big Town," ''Frontier'' and "It's A Great Life." (The Jimmy Durante, Milton Berle, Pinky Lee, Gordon Macrae and "Truth or Consequences" programs also will not return this fall). But, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on what you like on TV. both networks are rushing in replacement in the serial ranks.

CBS new entries are "Oh, Susanna." (Gale Storm); "Buccaneer," "The West Point Story" and "Hey, Jeannie" (Jeannie Carson). NBC cago in 1952. Dr. Horwich, then chairman of education department a Roosevelt University in Chicago, was called in as a consultant when station WNBQ wanted to start a TV program fot young children. A move from local to network followed a month later.

Dr. Horwich has created something of a record by neither missing nor repeating a single program in a total of 1,000. I would never gram," she says, repeat a "because pro children sense when you've done A thing before. They loose faith in you if you present something as a new experience when it actually isn't. eration is interesting for two reasons. One is that it is good to know that something can be done for those persons who, after a heart attack suffer much from pain and disability; and it is good to know that commonly a man who has had a bad heart attack can come through a severe operation. This a that a persons with a bad heart need not be too fearful when they are forced to have an operation on gallstones, or a cancer. Naturally, not all the persons who have had a heart attack can stand an operation. Everything depends on what we physicians call their "cardiac reserve." To illustrate: Some men, after a coronary thrombosis, can walk along the street about as rapidly as they did before, without much shortness of breath, and without pain.

A less fortunate man, with a poor cardiac reserve, will get short of breath and may get pain on walking slowly, or going upstairs, or even as he sits quietly in his chair at home. He may get distress if he tries to lie flat at night. In such case, we physicians say that the man's rope is short, and this is far more significant for his future than is the appearance of his electrocardiograms. Often in these cases a good heart specialist hardly looks at the electrocardiograms. Steady Diet of Music Irks Radio Listener By CHARLES FIERCER NEW YORK W-- There comes a letter from a reader who requests anonymity: "I'd like to speak about us radio listeners. My question is: Why do people who provide programs for radio think that all we listeners want from our sets is music, news, the weather and the correct time? "With the exception of the Mutual network, which still gives us a fairly balanced diet of talk, drama (including melodrama) and the aforementioned, it seems to me that about the only choice I find on my dial mornings while doing housework is which singer pied by other chores. There is, also, another aspect: Many advertisers with relatively small budgets seek low-cost programs.

And the least expensive program to produce is one of music. I elect to hear and which disc jockey annoys me least. "Now I hear that an NBC network show called 'Weekday' is going to be junked in favor of a two-hour band stint in the mornings. I wasn't the most ardent 'Weekday' fan in the world because it was such a jumbled up show, but I can't imagine what kind of thinking went into a decision to transfer to orchestras. Old Idea Untrue According to my old friend, Dr.

C. Sidney Burwell, of Harvard, who for much of a long life has made a special study of heart disease in pregnant women, in almost all instances she can be carried through successfully, and she can have her baby. The old idea that heart disease usually calls for an early termination of a pregnancy is generally untrue. In a recent report, Dr. Burwell and his associates said that in the Boston Lying-in Hospital about half of the pregnant women found there with heart disease had never known they had any trouble with their heart.

very important mitral valve. In 1 in 10 cases the heart disease was congenital in origin. The reason why doctors worry about heart trouble in a woman who wants a baby is that pregnancy puts added strain on her body. It increases, by about 40 per cent, the amount of blood that has to be pumped each day. Ocassionally with pregnancy, there may come a flare-up of the old infection of the heart valves.

Naturally, the woman with heart disease often needs extra care during her pregnancy. She may get an anemia that has to be corrected. Occasionally, when the heart fails a bit, the woman has to be bled. Dr. Burwell said that his 300 patients had had 375 pregnancies, with only 3 fatalities.
