Brocklebank, brother of Mrs. Governor Weller. His death, caused by putrid sore throat, took place at Oakland, yesterday evening. He was a gentle-roan universally esteemed for bis quiet and conrteous manners, and bis death will be deeply regretted by a large number of S. F.

National, June Wth. Contented. It is gratifying to observe the spirit of contentment, with which the greater part of the defea'ed candidates bear their disappointment. This is especiably noticeable, in the cases of Messrs. Merritt, McKinstry and Voorhies, who were unsuccessful aspirants to a seat in Congress from the Southern District.

Sam. Merritt is greatly tickled, because be ran ahead of Mo. and Van, although every body said outset of the contest, that be bad no chance. He received 50 otes, Mo. 48 and Van 29.

Mo. is well sat-lined, because he can yet enjoy five years of his unexpired term as District Judge, a compensation double that per annum, be would receive as member of Congress. Van endures his vanquishinent with heroic equani-nty, because of a consciousness of innate worth. He is del ermi ned hereafter, himself on his own resources," and thereby roid future disappointments. Altogether, we have never seen a trio of gentlemen; nre good sense and commendable resignation of spirit, better entitled them to success, wn Messrs.

Merritt, McKinstry and Voor-hies. The? are all men whose membership "editable to any party, and will vet reap rich reward for their fidelity to the principle! of democracy. National. ii8 Distroykd sr Fire. The town Tehama was almost entirely destroyed fire on Saturday morn'mrr.
