SAN FRANCISCO. SACRAMENTO CITY. A bird is known by bis note, and a man Historical accovkt or Htmijt. waa a beautiful youth of Athens, who Thc New Motive I'owrb. In the dead of night, when the robbers were all asleep, he cut their throats. Thence making hasty way bark to Athens, he bargained with the parents that he wou restore tbem their daughter and all her companions, if tbey would Consent to their marriage; which proving Tery happy, it became the custom to in Toke the name of Hymen at all nuptials. To Rf ssrti Femck Posts. In so important a branch of farming we endeavor to give everything that may have a beneficial tendency. A writer, in the 'Rural New Yorker," speaks confidently ot the following plan of preserving posts: "I prepare my post for setting, and then let them season I then take coal tar and faint them with three coats of the same, paint the posts from about four inches above where they are set in the ground to the bottom, and the end that sets in the ground also putting the paint on hot.

A gentleman informed me that he had known a fence set in this way that bad stood for ty years, and was as permanent then as at first. I think this way is much easier and cheaper than lime, and more durable." Worth Remembering. If a person falls in a fit and the fare be pale, let him remain on the ground; for should it be fainting, or temporary suspension of the heart's action, you may cause death by raisine the body or by b'eedinr. But if the face be red or dark colored, raise the body and keen it constantly in an upright position, throw cold water on the head, and have the person bled immediately, or fatal pressure on toe brain may ensue. Vice etings us.

Fourteen letters in evpry hundred are silent iu a piece of English composition. Men are accused of being deceivers. So they are: but they are themselves perhaps the principal victim.

No poultice has yet been discovered to draw out man's virtues so fully as the sod that covers bisjrave. To ascertain whether a woman is pas sionate or Dot, take a muddy dog into her parior. Tallyrand, talking of a man who dealt in nothing but quotations, said, "that fellow has a mind of inverted commas." A young man advertises in a city paper for a pi. tee as a salesman, and says that he has bad a great deal of experience, having iived in seven different stored within a year. "Sister, are you happy?" "Yes, Deacon, I feel as though I was in Beelzebub's bosom." "Not Beelzebub." "We some of the patriarchs, 1 don't care which." The International Journal estimates the available standing army of Russia, al ways ready for aggressive purpose, to he in round numbers 800,000 men, besides a navy of no inconsumable power. A man should never put a fence of words around his ideas, because many who would otherwise give him a fair hearing, lock resolution to climb over such a rugged enclosure. Here i Funny Fern's idea of "female friendship:" "Two women joining the mutual admiration of society; emptying their budget of love affairs, comparing bait to attract victims; sighing over the same rose leaf; patronizing the same milliner; and exchanging female ktstes." Betty hand me my fan How sacred, how beautiful is the feeling of affection in pure and guileless bosoms! The proud may sneer at it, the fashionable may call it fable, the aelrNh and dissipated may affect to despise it; hut the holy passion is urely of heaven, and is made evil by the corruptions of those whom it was sent to ess anil to preserve. Meroaunt. Not Vert Bad. The editor of the Erie a newly married man, said this the other day of his town contemporary: "The bachelor editor of the Gazette wants everybody to get up in the morning at 4 o'clock, for the purpose of hearing the birds sing.

For our part we have better compiny than birds at that hour in the morning, hence we shan't take his advice." The Daskwf.ss Gowk. M. A. Town-send, writing from New Brighton, under date of June 27th, says: "A little boy, 6 ind from birth, aged about four years, died in this village a few days ago with scarletina. About an hour hefore the little suffrrer departed, he exclaimed: "Pal I see now, Darkness is aH gone.

A singular cir cumstance, exhibiting in a reniarkab'e de gree the reflecting faculties of a wolf, is related as having taken place at Signo-le- Petit, a small town on the borders of Champagne. A fanner, one day, looking through the hedge of a garden, observed a wolf walking around about his mule, but unable to get at hi on account of the mule's constant kicking with bis bind legs. As the fanner perceived that his beast was so well able to defend itself, be considered it unnecessary to render him any assistance, ifter the attack had lasted fully a quarter of an hour, the wolf ran oil to a neighboring ditch, where he save nil times plunged into the water. 1 be tanner imagined he done this to re fresh himself after the fatigue he had sustained, and had no doubt that his mule had gained a complete victory; but in a lew minutes the wolf returned to the charge, and approached as near ns he could to the head ot the mule, shook him se and spirted a quantity of wviter into the mule's eyes, which caused him imme diately to shut them. 1 hat moment the wolf leaped upon Iiim and killed the poor mule before the fanner could come to his assistance.

Something Vert Rare It has been said of office holders, that few die and none resign No doubt the maxim is well founded in truth, hut as no rule exists without an exception, the following case, which we find recorded in the Portsmouth Va.) Transcript, shows that an office bolder can resign, and that in this instance the act was prompted by the purest and most laudable motives. Here is the story A gentleman from Virginia, a prominent Democrat, was an applicant tor office in one of the Departments of the lovern ment. His papt.rs, as the phrase goes, "were mane out," and the letter ot an pointment given him by the Secretary, who informed him that in a certain room, at a certain defik, he would find the indi vidual whose place he was to take, and that he must show the letter to him. Ueil, he found the room, and in due man filer presented the letter. The gentlemen at the desk, after perusing the document, observed, 'Well, sir, this is your 'desk, ami I am ready to clear the premises, suiting the action to the word, and starting to get off the ftool upon which was perched.

The newly appointed officeholder observing that the person whose place he was to fill was lame, and walked with difficulty, immediately said, "Sir, you can keep your are; I am not the man to deprive you it." He returned to the Secretary and informed him that sooner than deprive a lame man of office, he would return home! 1 he Secretary spp nuded the sentiment; and promised that he thould have 6ome office, at any rate. NO. Bee. Restitution. The Washington Coun ty Post says, a chap in a certain village, with whom he is acquainted, having had sanded sugar sold to him, inserted in the weekly na tier the following: Notice.

I purchased of a grocer in this village a quantity of sugar, from hieh I obtained one pound of sand If the rascal who cheated me will send to my ad- Jrrea oTrn pounds of good sugar, (scrip ture measHre ot restitution,) I win ue sat isfipd: if not. Dayard Taylor writes from China to tha New York Tribune as follows: I do not remember whether I have already stated that the leader of the Revo- i lution, Ting-1 uk, is a uescenmitii ot one of the branches of the ancient Chinese, or Ming dynasty, and that his avowed objert is to overthrow the present Ting, or Tartar dynasty. In fact, he is nrocaimed as Emperor on the bu let ins of his army, so that his rause has already risen above the dignity of a rebellion and assumes the as pect of a national war. It is Chinese against Tartar, and the penp are not indifferent to the issue. Any change cm hardly be for the worse; any kind of agi tation is better than the dead stagnation of Chinese life.
