Stars Carroll O'Connor, Jean Stapleton, Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers. 53 Emergency Drama i -n iifXlii1(i! During the late 50s, when pro football was emerging as the new supersport of television, a new breed of color-man was introduced to the gullible public. He was the ex-athlete, the granite-chinned, all-American the guy who gave the telecast glands. Made it a real man's sport. Today these men are the analysts, or jocks, as they could not be called in the 50s (and most of the 60s).

The jocks were a source of great concern and misgiving by the resident pros. Even today announcers such as Howard Coseli view the jocks with unmistakable disdain. "Very few of them are or ever become professionals," Howie snorts. "They are a disgrace to my profession." Coseli has a valid point. The jocks aren't trained in the radio-TV or communications school tradition.

They are trained on the air at the expense of the embattled viewer-listener. Usually, their problem is not one of poor delivery (although we have them) or annoying voice. Rather it is the tendency to overanalyze. Conversely, you have the ones who hardly open their mouths, and, embarrassingly, they are a bad investment. And again the fans suffer for it.

Network sports executives are much In favor of the jocks because network executives deal in the game of images and they believe the ex-athlete sells sports. "The guy in the tavern can Identify with the jock, and the women love him," one sports boss told us. Meanwhile Back to Critique But to get back to our critique. We covered most of the play-by-play men a few chapters ago and it will take another two to complete the list. Continuing alphabetical ly: TOM BROOKSHIER One of the best of the former athletes who was pure tapioca when he launched his network' career.

Now he is one of CBS' leading analysts. He reads plays with clarity and keeps the viewer alert on the possibilities of upcoming strategy. Brook-shier i3 an asset to the game plan. HEYWOOD HALE BROUN CBS's roving reporter commenting on the human predicament in athletics. He Is artsy-craftsy, cutesy.

He adjectives It to death. He conveys a modicum of humor and maximum of irrelevance. Colorful, he is. JACK BUCK Good, straight play-by-play announcer. Knows the game, dependable.

JACK DREES An old pro, although bland. AL DeROGATIS NBCs meandering analyst who seems to make partner Curt Gowdy nervous. DeRogatis is a master of overkill, a triple-threat to concentration. He drones on like a malfunctioning fan, never clearing the air and confusing the viewer. ALEX KARRAS New analyst for the syndicated.

Canadian Pro Football series (airing here on Channel 13), Karras, former Detroit Lions All-Pro, is a natural wit. He's the funniest colorman around and the bluest. He introduced the double entendre to football. He's either going to become the most popular man In his field, or he's going to get his own series. DON MEREDITH Folksy, funny, flamboyant and a no-nonsense analyst.

He's getting better every outing (on ABC) and he has showmanship. Coseli claims he "made Meredith a professional" Ah, Howie PAT SUMMERALL Good analyst and an excellent Interviewer. He, too, was pure pablum In the early days but made it big through on-the-job-training.
