John Havlicek led the Buckeyes witn au points. Lawson's Jewelers Presents: the gift of a lifetime i The Rams close the books today on a most discouraging season. The team played well in spots but amateurishly in others. After the-unthinkable trade of Del Shof-iJier to the Giants, morale went to pieces. Veterans lost -heart, feeling they had no security.

"It could be" me 'next" Then came the suspicion that the Rams were running "a doghouse. It was denied but no one Baw much this season of Tom Wilson or Joe Marconi. Finally an assistant coach, Hamp Pool, wound up the scapegoat, although his associates say he has bent over backwards this year to be co-operative, helpful and keep himself in the background. The end result has been disaster at the gate. Clearly the Rams will have to do something positive In 1962 to appease their dwindling fans.

In 1960 they drew 604,992 fans for 11 home games. This has dropped to 469,293 for 10 games this season, with the Packer game figures still to come. Recent Fights Called Frauds Commissioner Jim Smith of the California Athletic Commission describes the recent heavyweight promotion featuring Patterson vs. McNeeley and Liston vs. West-phal as Just plain "lousy." "Mismatches such as these should be outlawed," he stormed.

"If they had been proposed for California I know that I would have voted a screaming loud "no" against them. It amounted to outright defrauding of the man who buys a ticket." Liston's standing in California has not been defined. Two Philadelphia newspapers refused to support the Westphal fight because of Liston's background. "I'm not going to guess at it," declares Smith. "Should he ask for a license in California we would first demand a complete factual disclosure on who's who and what's behind him.

When you don't do that you might find yourself married to the wrong element in boxing again. We aren't hungry enough for big fights in California to throw aside the book and let hoodlums and racketeers back in." Incidentally, Mel (Red) Greb, Las Vegas promoter, who has successfully staged a Gene Fullmer-Sugar Ray Robinson bout and a Fullmer-Benny (Kid) Paret match, says it will be impossible for anyone to get light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore in the ring with Fullmer. Fullmer wants the match. Greb says it would take Ft. Knox to meet Archie's terms.

What Happened the Third Day? The daily double pool will be something new for Santa Anita this season but four employees of the track had a most pleasant experience with the pool at the harness races recently. On the way to Hollywood Park, Al Wilson had an inspiration. The four would put up a half dollar each and buy a $2 ticket on the last two numbers on the license plate of the first car they passed on the freeway. This they did and they collected over $600. Back they went the next day and bet the same two numbers and won again.

But the amazing thing Is that in 12 years this combination had never shown up before. Hollywood Park Introduced the daily double last season for the first time with curious results. Their early crowd picked up 40. Betting on the first race was off 42 and off 1 on the second race. But over-all betting on the first two races was up 12 on account of the double pool.

CThe record for a daily double payoff i3 $12,724.80 for a $2 ticket at Agua Caliente in 1954. Uncle Sam has shown a rather inconsistent Interest the double pool. Any time it is over $600, the winner to identify himself and make out a signed declaration before he can collect. Quite a racket has developed in this regard. Eack East, slick operatives have been selling winners the security number of deceased people for use in phoney declarations.

It ha3 never been explained satisfactorily why a person who wins $600 for a $2 daily double bet should have to pay income tax on it but a man who might win $6,000 on a $100 bet doesn't have to report a thing. HeaVs 7959-60 Talents Vanished Once around the sports beat If the Dodgers had traded Charlie Neal a year ago, and played Jim Gilliam second base all last season, they might have won the Neal's crucial errors kicked them out of It for two years In a row, in 1959 and 1960, Neal had been the best fielding second baseman in baseball. His batting average also plopped. Buzzie Bavasi, Dodger executive vice president, flatly agrees with those who says baseball should be speeded For another thing, he favors uniform dimensions for all parks. "A football field is always 100 yards," says Buzzie.

"A tennis court is the same size the world over. Basketball courts are equal. But there ha3 been no uniformity in baseball A fan should be entitled to know that a home run in Yankee Stadium Is the 6ame as a home run in Wrigley Field or Chavez Ravine." Did you know that the Dodgers will not allow their announcers to take an outside program if It means taking the job away from someone else. Jerry Doggett, Vin Scully's associate, was okayed for ice hockey, but only because it "was a brand new sport here Incidentally, Dodger contract with its sponsors calls for Scully to "broadcast seven innings and Doggett two Doggett turned down the No. 1 spot with the Houston ball club to remain with the Dodgers I chuckled at comedian Dave Barry's line at the last Santa Anita press party.

"I feel good," he said. "I finally shot a 71 today. Bowling He said he went to Caliente recently. "I wa3 very lucky. I got a ride back." Rice took a brief 7-6 lead with a 6-yd. drive late in the first period but Hadl's beautiful run led the Kansas comeback and the Owls made only one other serious threat Coleman Honored Rice had been favored by three points to score its fifth victory in seven postseason bowl classics. Kan sas was making its first bowl appearance since losing to Georgia Tech, 14-20, in the 1948 Orange Bowl. A light rain that fell practically throughout the nationally televised game cut attendance at the seat Rice Stadium to 52,000, Bluebonnet officials, how ever, said 61,000 tickets had been sold.

Top Player Coleman was voted the game's most outstanding back. Elvin Basham, a 194- pound Kansas guard, was the outstanding lineman. Rice's lone touchdown came on a five-yd. pass from Randy Kerbow to Johnny Burrell. The Kansas scoring drives covered 59, 65, 50, 36 and 69 yd.
