Currently, though, a bit of intrigue is developing that will make the Trump affair look like something the Boy Scouts could handle.

It has been reported the Southern California Broadcasters' Assn. is considering a protest to the FCC against XTRA News on grounds that it masquerades' as a California station. If they fde it, XTRA News officials plan a $10-million treble damage anti-trust suit not only against SCBA, but against members and member stations individually. XTRA also plans to ask the U.S. attorney general and California attorney general for criminal indictments against SCBA members on conspiracy and collusion charges.

Sound intriguing? Legal Plot Thickens Supposedly, the argument is that XTRA News represents the eighth station owned by Gordon Mc-Lendon's group and that FCC regulations only permit ownership of seven radio' outlets. It is also argued that XTRA is in reality a Mexican station operating out of Tijuana. XTRA's transmitter does operate out of Tijuana and the station's ofliecs are located in Los Angeles. A source close to XTRA contends that McLendon does not own the station but owns only the exclusive sales contract to XTRA News, and thereby cannot be counted as the eighth station owned by McLendon. The source also revealed that by law XTRA iclcn-tifics itself every 30 minutes in Spanish, complying: with FCC regulations.

XTRA, it was learned, has always been programed in Los Angeles. Until this year, XTRA was known as "Mighty 690." And "Mighty 600" was one of the trashiest operations in existence before it became XTRA and is now a 21-hour news station of good quality, "When it was 'Mighty 690, the spokesman stal-ed, "no one bothered with it, simply because it. not a factor in the Los Angeles market. Now, ii; parently, it has become a factor and the local stations are feeling competition." XTRA Plans Counter Measures The Times also learned that XTRA officials for three months have been steadily taping member stations of SCBA with Intentions of program disclosures to the FCC. The source explained that "examples of extremely blue material have been found and other violations of FCC regulations, such as race results, and more than commercial announcements in an hour period, have been uncovered." A "few" station executives we know will be a little more than concerned if XTRA's tapes are made public.
