Commercial TANGLE PATENT Regenerative Circuit Rights Bone of Contention Tico Inventors AicarJed Title by Different Judges Supreme Tribunal Decision Mixes Things Worse Radio manufacturers operating under license from the Westing-house Electric and Manufacturing Company, to which Edwin H. Armstrong had assigned his patents" on the so-called feed-back or regenerative circuit, ona of the most important features of radio receiving sets, find themselves In difficulties as result of the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court hold ing that Dr. Lee DeForest was the prior inventor of tne circuit.

It Is not believed, nowever, mai any great dimcuities to do encountered in straightening the situation out since the Westlnghouse company, after purchase of the Armstrong rights, later obtained a license under the DeForest patent, while Independent manufacturers operating under license from the Westlnghouse Company are ex pected to be able to obtain witnout difficulty similar privileges, under the DeForest patent. The patent controversy between the Wertinchouse and the DeFor est companies is of long standing and consists of several suits, one instigated by the DeForest com pany against the Westlnghouse com. pany to Invalidate tne Armstrong feed-back and another started by the Alien Property Cus todian, who claimed benefits of rights held by Alexander Meissner, an enemy alien, The case is further complicated bv the fact that the United States government has a shadow of a right to the DeForest patent tnrougn its jpurchase of the DeForest com pany and all its assets, under which it may assert that DeForest had no right to assign his patents, now held by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, to any but the DeForest Radio Telephone and Telegraph Company. The General Electric Company also enters into the case, holding patents secured by Irvine Longmulr. In trial of these suits In the lower courts the DeForest Company was awarded a decision by the District Court In Philadelphia in one 6ult, that decision later being affirmed by the Circuit Court of Appeals; while in another suit, which Involved the General Electric Company as well as Westlnghouse and DeForest.

the DeForest patent were sustained by the District Court in Delaware. Another suit in New York, covering the same subject matter, was decided In favor of Armstrong. DAILY FROLIC BROADCAST KPLA's breakfast program starts at 8 a.m. with a frolic and request hour. METERS 208.Z 211.

The stations have been divided ln- to national or high power; regional. more or less a State coverage, and local or community. CLEARANCE HOPED Preliminary reports from authorities everywhere have been to the effect that the new designations will clear up the chaotic condition to a large extent.

No panacea for the radio situation yet has been found. No scheme, however scientific, can make for perfect broadcast under the present condition of things. Until scientific progress makes it possible to have more minute separations Between stations until several hundred can operate at the same time no allocation will be flawless. But the changes of today will do considerable in-clearing up the situation. Fans at first may experience a-little difficulty in relogging the stations.

But practice makes perfect and before long, dialers will become accustomed to the changes. It probably will take a little bit longer for the stations to adjust the time divisions and, until then-w-jb- ably many of the time tables will be Imperfect. However, they are published as fl sent in by the various broadcasters. KHJ Station to Broadcast Sixteen Hours KHJ, the Don Lee station, has arranged a special broadcast for today commencing at 8 a.m. and I lasting until midnight.

The early morning broadcast will be particularly helpful for fans who are relogging their dials for the new allocations, which are effective today. KHJ will come in a trifle lower on the dials than formerly. In most seta it will probably be in about the center of the dial. The new frequency of the station Is 333.1 meters or 900 kilocycles. The 8 o'clock hour this mosnlng will introduce for the first time "The Two Girls." "The Two Boys" are well known for their early birds hour.

Now they will share honors with the feminine duo. As a quartet, they will present favorite melodies. Then the station will remain on the air continuously until midnight. One of the day's features will be "The Mikado," colorful opera, from 3 to 5 p.m., presented in recorded selections. new hour will be the ballad hour at 5 pm.

The second type is of most importance to the general public, since it is this type which will be used on the commercial airplanes which will be operated along the passenger and express lines to be established within the country.

-v The dominating requirement in design is that of small weight and physical dimensions. This refers ai1 tn Via eof Kiir lerv fha AlKJV VJ wtc DUVi muv niuv tir vuv batteries requisite for its operation. Every design element must be con sidered in the light of this require ment. The set must ba capable of installation anywhere on the air craft with simple remote controls when placed at an Inaccessible point. As an aircraft is in very rapid mo Hon, the distance over which signals are traveling is constantly changing, and a simnle and rugged volume control having a uniform action is consequently necessary.

Sufficient shielding of the set must be provided to limit interference from the engine ignition system to that in duced in the antenna structure. GAINS INDICATED IN STABILITY OF RADIO Indications of greater stability to the radio industry are derived from the fact that in 1927 the great ma Jority of sets, 1,907,230, were for five or more tubes, while only 30,962 sets were tor four tubes or less. This would Indicate that by 1927 the radio manufacturers had developed models of a more permanent nature and there was less of the experimentation and shifting from one set to another which was experienced in earlier yean.
