Other teams which are expected to do well, based on past performances, are East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria. The Soviet Union, winner in Weymouth, England, in 1968, is not on the list this time. The other countries are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and West Germany. The players generally have small Braille chess sets, on which they can feel the pieces while analyzing the game.

When a player makes a move, he announces it to his opponent. The then repeat the move to show that he has heard and under-1 stood it. Interpreters may be necessary if the players do not understand each other. i Braille chess clocks are' used, which can be felt, so the players know how much time each has left. A normal, time limit, such as 40 moves in two hours, is used.

FISCHER EXHIBITION Bobby Fischer went on an exhibition tour of Argentina last November after defeating Tigran Petrosian in their match in Buenos Aires. One of his. stops was Tucuman, where the Pan-American Team Tournament was place. Fischer's appearance created at least as much excite-merit as the proceedings at the team, matches and the accompanying congress.

In the simultaneous exhibition Fischer took on 20 opponents in easy going style, winning 17 games, drawing one and losing two, to Jose Rubinstein and Adolf Rod-. riguez. Vol. from 1851 to 1900, starts with the first tournament in modern times, organized by Howard Staunton in London, 1851. It was won by the German master Adolf Anderssen, who was then considered the best player in the world.

On the following page is New York, 1857, won by the immortal Paul Morphy of New Orleans, who then left for his triumphal tour of Europe, defeating all who would face including Anders-sen. The first tournaments were actually a series of matches on the knockout principle. The first round-robin tournament was in London, 1862, with Anderssen again the victor, and the American Louis Paulsen second. With activity in chess increasing considerably in the 1880s and 1890s, there are over 330 crosstables in the volume. Many are of a local and minor nature, but this is by far the most complete such compilation, and clearly took enormous labor to complete.
