Chicago's Media Gals Are Hostesses At Gala Parley Making a smash debut on the national scene as the newest national women's professional organization was the National of Media Women, Inc. in a historic first national convention held at the Sheratioii Blackstone hotel with Chicago as the hostess chapter. Civic groups were patrons and business firms vied to cooperate in giving the women in journalism, advertising, public relations, radio and television a send off The hospitality was led off with a gay "First Kdilion" party where Chicago's media men met the visiting meuia women in a hospitality bash arranged by Schieffelin, with radio station WBKE commuting music. From Saturday morning's "Coffee in Danish" through the Wine and Sausage Festival," Royal Crown Cola's "Dinner at Eight" and the "30" Happening which followed, the entertainment pace thrilled the visitors. "Luncheon with the Fourth Estate" drew throngs of Chicagoans to meet the national officers and delegates and enjoy the fashion show staged by WVON's woman's director, Bernadine Carrickett Washington, which featured Cari Scott's Boutique, displayed by attractive models.

Highlighting the luncheon was. an Award of Merit presented to radio station WBBM's public opinion speci ilst. Jerry Wiliams, for his "effective work in projecting the civil rights struggle." It was presented by Theresa Fambro Hooks, a national vice president and organizer and president of the Chicago chapter, and women's editor of the Chicago Daily Defender. Receiving plaudits for their planning of the convention were Doris E. Saunders, vice president of the local chapter and president of information, Inc.

and co chairman Frances T. Matlock, publicist and member of Shadd and Associates marketing and advertising firm. National officers in attendance were founder and president Rhea E. Calloway of New York City, advertising director of the New York Amsterdam News; Dr. Blanche Russell Crayton, vice president, of Cleveland, Ohio, a public relations consultant; Mrs.

llelcne Southern Slater, recording secretary and president of Southern Slater Enterprizes; and Peri Cousins Harper, Treasurer, New York City TV program director. Other out of town delegates included Betty Frank Lomax of New York, an author and radio commentator; Jessie Mae Beavers Brown, president of the Los Angeles chapter and women's editor of Los Angeles Sentinel; Jewel Gentry Hubert, society columnist for the Memphis World. Gertrude Wilson, feature writer for the New York Amsterdam News; and Attorney Florynte Rae Kennedy of New York, radio commentator and writer. Other Chicago hostesses included Josie Garth Barnes, secretary and registration chairman; Audrey T. Weaver, treasurer; Hennie Mae Cisco, Mattie Smith Colin, publicity chairman; Louise P.

Dumetz, Florence Dyson, Betty Edwards, Barbara Gardner Proctor, Phyllis Garland, Charlotte Hunt, Charlotte Logan, Ruth H. Mc Coy, Connie Seals, Thelma Hunt Shirley, Florence Somerville and Betty Washington.
