The Florida based singer, songwriter, and guitarist has a way of coming across as the kind of easygoing guy who likes a drink now and then (and numerous times in between), goes for simple stuff like cheeseburgers, and although he's not stupid, he's not going to spring anything downright intellectual on you, either. And he's got a sense of humor, too. Buffett's albums are generally the same way. particularly his new "Son of a Son of a Sailor" (ABC). It's a thoroughly enjoyable bunch of ballads, mostly on the country-rock side, about relationships, travels, even cheeseburgers.

The melodies are catchy and comfortable: the pace is gently loping and the overall effect is totally engaging. L. V. Rogm Worthingf0H Mickey Tucker "HARD BOP LIVES" is the message of pianist Mickey Tucker's "Sojurn" (Xanadu), a six-tune musical travelog of his 1976 tour with Art Blakey's band. Tucker's group includes two old hard bop hands, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook and trumpeter Bill Hardman.

Baritonist Ronnie Cuber also fits the groove, and Tucker's compositions have a definite Horace Silver flavor. As a pianist. Tucker is reminiscent of Bobby Tim-mons: He has technique to spare, a strong rhythmic drive, and an individual harmonic sense. Each track of this well-planned album presents a different mood, with the Latin-like "Tunisian Festival" and a blues-ballad entitled "Norwegian Nights-Norwegian Days" standing out. Notable, too, is the work of bassist Cecil McBee, who is a brick throughout.

A solid, happy, twinging record. Larry Karl Ril Scliaefer BAL SCHAEFER IS a fine pianist wW made his mark backing up such people as Peggy Lee, Billy Eckstine, Vic Damone, and Judy Garland. "The Extra-rdinary Jazz Pianist Hal Sbaefer" (Discovery Records) is a recording of a 1976 appearance at Donte's in Los Angeles. The audience is appreciative, and Schaefer turns out a flawless performance of six durable standards. It's easy to understand why Schaefer is so highly regarded as an accompanist.

His light, lyrical playing flows over and into the rhythm accompaniment like honey on butter. True, his chord voicings are dated and his lines short, direct, and seldom adventurous. But for a singer, Schaefer's consummately tasteful skills are ideal. The only problem with this record is the title. An extraordinary jazz pianist he's not If Discovery really wanted to do Schaefer, his fans, and maybe themselves a good turn, they'd put together an album of bis most memorable accompan- I1 ftiaulni' il 4.10.
