I Celebrities to NEWS VIEW THEATER OPENS WITH SPECIAL SUBJECTS Nevspaper Yarn Funny When a newspaperman dis Similarity in Characters of Two Films Seen I Despite the fact that "Rebecca at the Four Star Theater is en SCHALLKRT Cohan Show Will Open NEW YORK, May 2. (Exclusive) The George Cohan show, "The Return of the Vagabond," will open May 13 at the National, Cohan having decided flngciccxraimcs PART I FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1940 PAGE 18 1ft Walter Titkin wrote "Life Begins at Forty," but Gertrude W. Hoffman, mother of three children, grandmother of four, takes issue with him. She's written a story for SKP called "Crashing I folly wood at Sixty." Her husband was Ralph Hoffman, director of Museum of Natural History at Santa Barbara, where she lived happily until his tragic death. Then she came to Hollywood and made herself useful.

Since 1932 she's covers news, that's not news. But when a newspaperman himself makes news, that's coals to Newcastle! And making news is just what the reporter hero of "This Man Is News," English-produced comedy, does. The film Is at the Cinema. A Jaunty reporter sets sacked for not locating a crook who Is being hunted down for squealing. The reporter goes home, drinks champagne with his cute wife and then telephones his paper that he has Just seen the hunted crook killed! The editor believes and prints the story, and, the luck of newspaper people being what it Is, the crook actually Is killed before the paper comes out the morning.

That restores him to favor with his editor, but not with the crooks, and things get pretty sultry when they go after him. It's all rather far-fetched, but there are delicious bits of comedy, and some especially good acting by Alistair Sims as the editor, Barry K. Barnes as the reporter and Valerie Hobson the young wife. Sacha Guitry and Pasteur are names to conjure with, and Guitry, noted French author-actor-producer, gives a telling characterization of the great French scientist, the film being made more Impressive by the fact that the words he speaks are authentic. But while there are some English subtitles, they are not sufficiently numerous to aid the non-French-speaking spectator.

Of drama there is little, the one episode of this sort being that showing a little boy bitten by a mad dog and the treatment given him by Pasteur. 1 HH ii (I '1 stuiai 4 LI BY KDYVIX The newsreel theater is day by day, and evening by evening, entering a more thriving phase of Its career. Possibly it's all In anticipation of television's progress, which will probably find a ready receptivity in these show-houses later on for projections from real life. At the moment the reels of world events carry a maximum of timeliness, as disclosed In the mauguratory program given at the News-View News Reel Theater on Hollywood Blvd. last night.

This first presentation held exceptional Interest and drew an audience of prominent people from the executive branches of the film industry, particularly and a few stars. Special features were added to the regular routine. HOT OFF C.IUDDLK The theater boasts a policy of showing newsreels air-expressed from New York In 15 hours and 40 hours from London. Most striking of events were the Inside views of the Warsaw siege ngeniouslv secured by Julian Bryan in Poland. Absorbing every moment was this noteworthy chronicle of destruction.

Another special reel applied the words of Washington to European events of today, though it held less significance than the other feature. The regular "News-Views" as they are called offered by the theater are inter-esting and comprehensive. Much, of course, has to do with the his torical happenings of the mo ment In Europe, but there are lighter inclusions sports, woman's page. Lew Lehr commenting on bathing beauties, and various other items to mak up. a topical magazine.

I.V MODKRV SPIRIT The theater itself, with comfortable lean-back seats and Interesting wall decorations showing progress in transportation and other human activities, evokes the thoroughly modern spirit, as does the bright and attractive ex I played senger down, 38 parts In pictures. Now they've thrown Mai Kirf out the old regime, put in Howard Philbrick, who used to be a G-man on Edgar Hoover's staff. He's made his own blitzkrieg; it's too.

No relatives of any oflicer of Central Casting can work as a one If you won.t marrv terior, which Is In the streamlined mood. Besides the news, a Merrie Melody cartoon, "The Bear's Tale," on the Goldilocks and Three Bears Idea, with Red Riding Hood and the Wolf added for good measure, was shown. It's a first-rate number of this sequence, with many laughs. Carey Wilson's metaphysical commentary on "A Door Will Open," with Dalies Frantz as a concert pianist and Lynne Carver in feminine lea'd, holds fascination, with Frantz displaying some excellent musicianship. A Pete Smbth novelty, "Spots Before Your Eyes," is diverting.

HUT WILL BE REPRODUCED "East of Tahiti," opening at the Mayan Theater next Tuesday night, will use an authentic reproduction of a royal native hut, the abode of the ruling family on a South Seas Island, as a setting. The action of the three-act drama, authored by Ilenet Costa, occurs on this one set which enabled Designer Dickson Morgan to duplicate a royal hut to the smallest detail. Esquire Books 'Baker's Wile Following Grace Moore's "Louise" at the Esquire Theater will be "The Baker's Wife." The new film is booked to open Friday night, May 10. "The Baker's Wife" stars Raimu.
