Special Advertising Supplement Circus Circus gets approval for monorail system Approval was recently granted by the Clark County Commission for construction of a monorail shuttle system to connect Circus Circus HotelCasino with Circus Circus Manor, an 810-room hotel now being built on Circus Circus Drive. Construction on the dual-car people-mover will begin Aug. 1, marking the first use of a monorail for public transportation in Las Vegas. The long monorail will span Circus Circus Drive 18 feet above street level. Air-conditioned cars, each with a capacity of 30 passengers, will move between pick-up terminals to be constructed at the northeast corner of Circus Circus HotelCasino and in front of Circus Circus Manor.

Operation of the system will be fully automatic and monitored via closed-circuit television. Designed by the VSL Corp. of Los Gatos, the Metro-Shuttle 6000 has been described as the most economical and reliable transit system ever developed for moving people over short- to mid-range distances. "The system is energy-saving, pollution-free, safe, quiet and attractive," said William G. Bennett, chairman of the board of Circus Circus Hotels Inc.

"We anticipate that urban centers throughout the nation will be watching us with great interest." Carl Lovell secretary-treasurer and legal counsel for Circus Circus Hotels, together with Swiss engineers representing the VSL were present at the commission meeting with full-color artist's renderings and engineering specifications of the proposed monorail. The need for such a system at Cir cus Circus, explained Lovell, evolved as a result of the expansion of the family-oriented resort complex into three distinct areas: Circus Circus HotelCasino, with 800 rooms; the 421-space Circusland RV Park across the street from the main Big Top, completed last summer; and Circus Circus Manor, now under construction, across the street and northwest of Circus Circus HotelCasino and adjacent to the RV park. Completion of the new five-building hotel will bring the Circus Circus-Las Vegas room total to 1,610. It is expected that the first phase will be ready for occupancy in late July or early August. Inauguration of the trend-setting monorail shuttle system is slated for early 1981.
