The resolution, the last major order of business before the 74th NCAA convention at New Orleans, passed without dissent.

The resolution read: "Be it resolved that if the President of the United States does determine that participation by U.S. athletes in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow is not in the best interest of the nation and if he requests that U.S. athletes refrain from participating, the NCAA will support the President and will join him in requesting that athletes from member institutions not participate." David Sweet, president of Rhode Island University, who introduced the resolution, said, "Athletes, more than any others, must understand the importance of self-sacrifice for the greater good." Sweet said the resolution does not bind member colleges and universities but puts the NCAA on record as supporting the President if he proposes a boycott. Suspended Utah State forward Bernard King, arraigned in Salt Lake City on sex and drug charges, was allowed to leave the state for treatment of alcoholism. Defense attorney Robert Van Sciver said King was entering St.

In 1955, at the age of 20, he won the American League batting title at .340, becoming the youngest player ever to win the title. University of Tennessee basketball coach Don DeVoe lifted the suspensions of starting forward Reggie Johnson and reserve center Chuck Treeths. "I think Reggie and Chuck have been punished enough," said DeVoe, who suspended the players last Thursday for curfew violations. "Basically, I don't want to do anything that's going to hinder our chances of winning another important basketball game." The wife of New Jersey Nets guard John Williamson said she won't press an assault charge against her husband as a result of the couple's reconciliation, a lawyer said. Williamson was apprehended New Year's Day after his wife told police he struck her at the end of a drive to Connecticut from their South Orange, N.J.

home and abandoned her on foot, police said. Superior Court Judge Albert Cretella in New Haven, referred the case to the Family Relations Division with the agreement of the state prosecutor and Williamson's lawyer. The University of Alabama was named 1979 college football champion by Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation. The title was the fifth awarded to Alabama by Citizens Savings. The Crimson Tide also was named in 1925, 1926 (co-champion with Stanford), 1961 amd 1978 (co-champion with Oklahoma and USC).

Names in the News Evonne Goolagong withdrew from this week's $125,000 Tennis Championships of Cincinnati because of a hand injury. Crenshaw Shoots 66 to Win Tournament at Palm Springs Sptclal to Tlw Tlmts PALM SPRINGS Ben Crenshaw birdied five of his first six holes to shoot a 6-under-par 66 Tuesday and win the ninth annual Day With the All Americans tournament at Canyon Country Club. The 66 equals the tournament record. Crenshaw, three-time Ail-American and NCAA champion from the University of Texas and now considered one of the finest players on the pro tour, rolled in five putts of over 20 feet during his round of six birdies and no bogeys. It was the second victory for Crenshaw in this charity event in which proceeds benefit needy youngsters with college scholarships. "We've had pretty good winter in Texas and at least I was able to hold a club in my hand and practice a little, which is why I played so well here," Crenshaw said.

"But I sure didn't expect to shoot a 66." Mike McCullough was second with a 67, followed by six pros at 68, including rookie John Cook, a former California Amateur champion. Two quality speakers-in-one handle up to 50 watts peak power. 20-oz. magnets. Select a pair and save at Kmart.
