2 Pari II Sat., Jan. 26, 1980 VIEWING SPORTS Last Gasp: So -What Bowl BY PAUL HENNIGER Tlmtt JtiH Wrlttr Did somebody in back yell, "One more time!" or was it, "One more for the road!" Must have been a football fan. Anyway, he's getting his wish. ABC, which misses out in the playoff games and Super Bowl each year, gets the final NFL game of the season, the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl, sometimes called the So-What Bowl or Why-Bother Bowl. But the game has some justification for the players after expenses, the TV rights and gate monies go into the NFL player pension fund. The players and coaches, by ballot, select members of their squads, so there's some pride in knowing a player has been honored by his peers in being named to the squad. And it's a fun trip this year to Hawaii, where the game is being played in Aloha Stadium in Honolulu which, one of these years, will be the home stadium of an NFL franchise. Kickoff time here Sunday is 1 p.m. (10 a.m., Honolulu time) over Channels 7, 3 and 10. How would you like to be the coach of a team that has the likes of Roger Staubach, Archie Manning, Ottis Anderson, Walter Payton, Rich Saul, Dennis Harrah, Tony Hill, Lee Roy Selmon, Jack Youngblood, Randy White and Cliff Harris available? They're on coach Tom Landry's NFC team. When coach Don Coryell of the AFC team looks down the bench he can call on Terry Bradshaw, Dan Fouts, Franco Harris, Earl Campbell, Mike Webster, John Stall-worth, Dave Casper, Joe Greene, Randy Gradishar, L. C. Greenwood and Donnie Shell. SHORT TAKES: As the NBC Olympic Games in Moscow picture looms more gloomy by the hour, that hasn't stopped Don Ohlmeyer from signing up more sportscasters. Latest to join the team is Merle Harmon, the veteran freelancer who's been working those Mizlou network sports and was prominent in the Old World Football League . . . It will be a happy group working the prime NBA telecast on CBS this season, now that the "Jolly Black Giant" has joined the sportscasting team. Big Bill Russell, the ex-NBA superstar, coach and former broadcaster for ABC, has the most infectious laugh in TV . . . "You'll find in talking to other players that I'm well-liked and my so called actions don't disturb them ... I'm not perfect, but I'm close as anybody can get . . . I'm not modest and this rankles some people . . ." Reggie Jackson? Jimmy Connors? No, Marshall Holman, known as the "bad boy of bowling," quoted in Bowling Illustrated magazine. . . The Super Bowl and post-Super Bowl program, as expected, ran one-two in the Nielsens, but only about half the audience stayed with or suffered through that .90-minute "NFL Today" pre-game hype-a-thon that aired L30-3 p.m. (4:30-6 p.m. ET).
