Indeed, the transformation of the former 20th Century Hotel to today's Treasury has been astonishing. And so is the success story of its owner, Herb Pastor. The Treasury is Pastor's third "turnaround" story since he he took a defunct, boarded-up casino and, five years ago, transformed it into the famous Golden Goose, a landmark on Fremont Street.

He then tackled the Coin Castle, which now thrives in a location where three others had failed. Highly experienced at 42, Pastor is the fourth owner of the flourishing Treasury, which was a loser for Howard Johnson's, the Paradise and the 20th Century. Today, the casino is ablaze with a myriad of flashing lights reflected in the multi-mirrored walls. Live country music sets the up-tempo pace, and the casino action never 8lOWS Recently, the Treasury took the big step of "going country." The gutsy move is paying off-Treasury customers tend to smile and tap their feet, and the country-western flavor draws a packed house. The country theme is carried in "Bandanas Britches," the Treasury's rollicking main show.

The cocktails are low priced, and the show is $4.95. A complete buffet meal, featuring four hot entrees, a dozen salads, hot vegetables and home-baked desserts can cost as little as $1.79. The hotelcasino advertises "the most liberal casino games in the world," including 21, craps, roulette and keno. highrise, a mechanized pedestrian walkway, more than 22,000 square feet of additional convention meeting space, a new parking facility and enlarged casino and dining areas. Del Webb Construction is supervising the entire project, which is designed by architect Martin Stern A.I. A. The new hotel highrise will soar 37 stories into the Las Vegas skyline and offer 625 rooms and suites. The project is expected to be finished in 1981.

One of the dramatic elements of the multi-million dollar project is the pedestrian walkway, which spans the width of Paradise Road, the main street running parallel to the famous Strip, and serves as access to the hotel's rear entrance. The elevated walkway is mechanized with escalators for entrance and exit and will be glass-enclosed and fully air conditioned. Completion is scheduled for December. This walkway, actually a bridge, is a first for Las Vegas. It will transport people from the lighted parking lot, with 24-hour security, to the hotel's rear entrance.

A new shopping promenade is connected to the exit of the walkway and will lead guests to boutiques and stores, including the Sahara's new disco and deli- CdtSS6n. Near the promenade is the Sahara Space Center, home of the Jerry Lewis Telethon and many meetings and conventions. Part of the expansion and remodeling will include an additional 22,000 square feet of meeting space. At the hotel's front will be the world's tallest free-standing sign. The glowing letters S-A-H-A-R-A each will stand 18 feet high, while the entire sign will rise 222V6 feet.
