1979-j- Cog Anfleleg Stones FALCONS UPSET THE CHARGERS Continued from First Page don't really know what they're talking about," said Lee-man Bennett, the Falcon coach. "Our team put out a good effort and did a super job." "One game we play like champions," said Bartkowski, "and the next week won't look good at all. It has been a frustrating season for us." The frustration belonged to the Chargers Sunday. The sign on the wall in the end zone said: "Air Coryell Nonstop to Pasadena." But there was a very rough unscheduled landing Sunday in Mission Valley. Dan Fouts passed for another 300 yards, getting 338 on 28 completions in 38 tries, and even led his team in rushing with 42 yards on five carries.

It was Fouts' sixth 300-yard game of the season, tying Joe Namath's NFL record. And he became the fourth all-time passer in single season yardage. He also came so close to pulling a miracle after Bart-kowski's pass to Francis with so few seconds left on the clock. Mike Fuller, who had been beaten by Francis on the scoring play, returned the kickoff 17 yards and the Chargers had it on their own 43 with 16 seconds to play. On the first play, Fouts hit John Jefferson down the middle for a gain of 27 to the Falcon 30.

Nine seconds remained and a timeout was called. "We thought maybe we could get 10 or 12 yards on a sideline pass," Fouts said. "We figured we had time to throw it one more time and move it down a little bit." The play was to go to Charlie Joiner, but Dewey McClain batted the ball away. The field-goal team trotted on with five seconds to play, but the penalty on Floyd had been called on the far side. Wood needed to move it back five yards, and his 53-yard attempt hit the back line of the end zone under the crossbar.

"I don't think I left the line of scrimmage," Floyd said, "but maybe I was leaning forward or moving my leg. I was probably guilty." It was Floyd's second serious mistake. Early in the fourth period, when the Chargers trailed, 21-17, Fouts threw to Joiner for an apparent first down at the Atlanta 22, but Floyd was called for offensive interference away from the ball and the penalty killed the drive. But "rookie mistakes" were not limited to rookies. Later in the last period, after Clarence Williams' two-yard touchdown run had sent San Diego ahead, 24-21, the Chargers had a chance to put the game away.

Woodrow Lowe's interception gave them the ball at the Atlanta 33, and on third and three, Fouts threw to Mike Thomas for an apparent first down but Russ Washington, the veteran tackle, was called for holding. In fact, referee Gordon Mc-Carter announced: "He tackled his man." The penalty killed that drive. After the ensuing punt, Atlanta had the ball at its three and Wilbur Young sacked Bartkowski for a safety that made the score 26-21. But the safety was a very well-disguised blessing for Atlanta. The free-kick from the 20 got Atlanta out of the hole.

The Chargers, playing conservatively with the lead, ran Williams three times and punted. Kicking against a heavy rush, Jeff West punted the ball only 10 yards and the Falcons had it at their own 49. "I just did it quick," West said. "I knew there were peo- THE FALCONS Continued from First Page beating this team, the biggest he has played all season? "I feel fine," he snapped. "I don't feel any differently than I did when I got up today.

And I felt great when I got up." Reminded of the rumors, Bennett said, "Well, that's what they were-rumors. They were simply not true. That's what a rumor is something that isn't true." Nevertheless, Bennett decided before the game he would motivate his players by talking about next year. The inevitable next year. "Yessir," he said, "I told them the season starts now.

We're out of the playoffs, so why not go for it. Next year, I mean. "We can sure-as-shootin' make our presence felt. Go over and ask the Chargers if we did that today. Just goes to show-sometimes, the experts don't know what they're talking about." And, as a result, heads were probably spinning in Las Vegas.

But several Falcon players tossed in "anger" to capture the feeling of a team caught in a web of disappointment. Without Bartkowski, the Falcons were even worse than they had been, losing badly to New Orleans the second time they played, falling to Los Angeles in a close one. No Falcon was willing to say Bartkowski makes the difference. Certainly not rusher Williams Andrews, who eased the memory of fullback Bubba Bean's injury by gaining 131 yards on 21 carries. "No comment" was Andrews' appraisal of Bartkowski as a quarterback.

On the field, the two worked hand-in-hand, as Bartkowski completed 17 of 30 passes for 225 yards. At the gun, the Chargers' Dan Fouts had a share of a passing record; Bartkowski had the win. The fifth-year player from California has curly hair, a stern jaw and from ear to ear a rowful of dimples. He trotted out the usual niceties to which quarterbacks are prone after winning close ones. "I wouldn't want to play them on a regular basis," he said as he golly-gee-whizzed his way through a post-game interview.

"Our offensive line did such a good job of blocking. And our guys made some big, key plays." Then Bartkowski, wearing a T-shirt from the San Diego Zoo, politely excused himself to apply a Band-Aid to his knee. He might have scraped his knee on any of several plays. Bartkowski passed for 13 to Francis, but a clip on Jim Mitchell set the ball back. The Falcons persevered, however, and Bartkowski got them into the end zone with his pass to Francis.

It was seemingly an uphill battle all day for the Chargers. They trailed, 7-0, in the first period, 14-10 at the half and 21-17 entering the fourth period. Everyone in the stadium, including those in uniform, thought they would find a way. There seemed to be no feeling of urgency, as if the best team simply had to win. But it did not happen.

Atlanta, which had been without Bartkowski the previous two games because of a hip-pointer, used his passing and a solid running attack to gain 375 yards against a Charger defense that had been tough through a four-game winning streak. "We were ready to play," defensive back Mike Williams said, "but we were beaten by somebody who wanted it more. They came out early and took it to us the whole time." Larrye Weaver, the defensive backfield coach, said: "They played a danged good game. We knew they were capable of doing what they did and they did it." Atlanta provided a perfect example of how well a team can move the ball if it can both run and pass. It mixed it up and got 222 yards through the air and 153 yards on the ground.

The Charger defense simply could not cope, although injuries in the line hurt. "This time of year," said Young, the mammoth defensive lineman, "just about everybody's hurting. You go with what you've got." Fred Dean sat out the game with a groin pull and Gary Johnson injured his back in pregame drills. Johnson and Lcroy Jones played much of the game in spite of injuries. It was a loss for which there were no excuses, however.

And it was a loss that magnified the importance of next week's game in New Orleans. "There's going to be great pressure-next week," Coryell said of the game with the Saints. "They're fighting for the same thing we're fighting for, a divisional championship. It's going to be a dogfight down to the end." He has said that on previous occasions. His team, at least, will now be listening.
