FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA A richer, funnier, more daring film than ANIMAL TIMK MAGAZINE fir MOVIE REVIEW Brave Old World in 'Clonus Horror' "The Clonus Horror" (city wide on a double bill with "The is a low-budget science-fiction horror movie with unusually high production values (good cinematography and imaginative art direction).

The effect is cynical. "The Clonus Horror" depicts a society rotted by a corrupt system where nobody wins and the few people with honor get destroyed when they try to protest. The film is a laudable first feature by producers Myrl A. Schreibman and Robert S. Fiveson.

However, "The Clonus HP this film is a treasure trove of humor." NEWSWEEK THE FIRST TIME, IT WILL DAZZLE YOl'K SENSES. THE SECOND TIME. YOITL SEE IT FOK THE FIKST TIME. Horror" is essentially an idea movie with too much exposition and too little tension. Director Fiveson, whose background is in television documentaries, gets good performances from promising young players and achieves an effectively cold and spooky atmosphere for his elitist brave old world. Clonus, an island off the coast of Southern California, is a breeding facility to create clones duplicating people in power so when one of their body parts stops functioning it can be replaced. Paulette Breen and Tim Donnelly are subversive young lovers. Donnelly escapes and with the help of a retired newspaperman and his wife (warmly played by Keenan Wynn and Lurene Tuttle), Donnelly finds his human father (David Hooks), who happens to be the brother of a power-hungry and ambitious senator (Peter Graves) who is in on the clone con.

James Mantell, who plays Donnelly's human brother, is very sympathetic. The screenplay by Ron Smith and Bob Sullivan, from a story by Sullivan, is satirical, but the human characters, as well as the clones, lack uniqueness. Rated for scenes of violence and clones being tortured and dismembered. -LINDA GROSS LA UNIVERSITY VILLAGE MALL. WEST C0VINA.
