3 6 Part IV Fru Nov. 16. 1979 Co0 Anjjelea THC0 It's the nuttiest, naughtiest, looniest, gooniest, funniest madcap comedy of the year! SHEER MAGNIFICENCE THE ULTIMATE ANIMATION SPECTACLE! JV MOVIE REVIEW Katharine Ross in Gory 'Legacy' BY KEVIN THOMAS Tliim Staff Write There's nothing wrong with updating the "old dark house" chiller as long as it's done with style and humor. These are, however, precisely the qualities sorely lacking in "The Legacy" (citywide). In their place, worse yet, is much gratuitous gore surrounding a series of lingeringly and graphically depicted horrible deaths underlined further by the film's noisy and incessant score.

This time it's Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott as the couple who take shelter in an old mansion, a great 17th-century English manor house, only to find they're mysteriously trapped. Their gracious but quickly incommunicado host THE LEGACY A Universal rains ef an Arnold Kopelson presentation ol a Turman-Fos-terPethurst production. Exec producer Kopelson. Producer David Foster. Coates. Featuring Katharine Ross, Sam Elliott, Roger Daltrey, Charles Gray. Lee Montague, Hlldegard Nell John Standing, Margaret Tyuck, Marianne Broome. Running time: I nr. 40 mln.

MPAA-rated: (persons under 17 must be accompanied by parent or adult guardian). (John Standing) has summoned five people, including the Who's Roger Daltrey, but for what evil purpose? Alas, it's indicative of the quality of the picture when your only real concern is that some superb linen-fold paneling in the mansion has apparently been painted while only for the purposes of filming. What happens inspires revulsion rather than terror or suspense as feature-debuting director Richard Marquand's heavy hand compounds the lack of inspiration and conviction in a scipt by various people. As a Universal release, "The Legacy" (MPAA-rated: R) in fact dishonors its own natural legacy, such Universal horror classics as "The Cat and the Canary" and, of course, "The Old Dark House." As persuasive as she is, despite some unfortunate boom-eranging dialogue, Ross has too much going against her. Elliott has the right idea in trying for some leavening humor but has been so awkwardly directed he's made to seem clumsy.

You can't help agreeing with him when he says, "I don't believe this." TECHNIRAMA" TECHNfCOLaW ci'n iH.nvy i-n-tiHrn. Kr-Hrlraiml by BUKNA VIKTA DIHTHIHl THIN I'D.
