Opinion Grows Syngman Rhee Will Give Consent by sticf or to violate Its terms once made. There seems i doubt that when the day of trure-signiiiK arrives. Khoe will have been quelled. By J. M.

KOBKKTS JK. Press News Analyst The impression was Allied rirclfs la 1 i irmly or i i i drop his intransiKent at- about a Korean truce when the chips are really down. The Allies, headed by the United States, have plenty of pressure to be used on Rhee in the showdown. It will be used if necessary. Or he may see that he is working himself into an impossible situation nnd give up the fifzht.

In the mean- i i a truce demarcation i is being drawn, he has a few more days in which to blow his patriotic trumpets. Part of Command. Rhee doesn't have to reverse i in order to let the truce go through. All he has to do is fall i South Korean troops are under I'nited Nations Command, a 1 unless he tries to pull them out of a command before the armistice is signed, they will take orders about cease-fire and withdrawal from the demarcation line lust like other troops. If he should try to pull them out of the Allied command before the truce, the Allied nutcracker will go to work on him in earnest.

If he should try to defy U. N. orders a a signing, the Allies would not be responsible for what the Communist forces did to his forces. The Allies would themselves be required to help control the situation on a basis of local insurgency wherever South Korean troops threatened to violate the truce line. The situation would just not be one which the South Koreans would be capable of facing.

Allied Issues Deep. The issue for the Allies is too great to permit disruption of the truce prospects. There are only two alternatives to a truce. One is a vastly intensified war effort, at a cost which no one is willing to contemplate, and at the risk of setting off a general war. The other is complete withdrawal from the Korean affair, which can hardly be contemplated.

That be to give the Communists a victory which they could not at- a i by arms. It would kill the hope of collective security for many small nations which would immediately start running for some other cover. Many of them would wind up in Russian thralldom. It might encourage Russian jingoism to the point where a direct outbreak on her part would become a daily threat, rather than the off chance which it is now considered. The Allies have largely quit worrying now about the possibility of last-minute switch on the part of the Reds which would break up the truce negotiations.
