March 1 5tb 1S46 Sir As the proprietor of the only hotel in Howth allow me to inform you that your remarks on the Dublin Letter in your paper of Thursday last cannot apply to me the advertisement alluded to in the Mail not i being from me I remain your obedient servant PATRICK M'KENNA LOANS IN AID IRISH RAILWAYS Sir Robert Peel has determined on doing all in his power 1 to facilitate the construction of Irish railways He in I formed the House of Commons on riday night that the Exchequer Loan Commissioners would be ready to receive applications for loans from Irish companies and that they would be empowered to grant loans on due eecurity being given The directors of the Waterford and Limerick company have applied for 1000001 by way of loan and we understand that the application will be granted One or two millions thus expended by government will soon change the aspect of Ireland morally socially and Irish Railway Gazette A BAD EXAMPLE We perceive from the following notice which we copy from the Tipperary Vindicator that the high sheriff of that connty is about to imitate the evil example of his i neighbour sheriff Mr Barrington and to exclude from the grand jury panel of Tipperary Maher the honest re presentative of the people a gentleman owning 50001 a year unencumbeied property in the county We have just neara tnat our county memoer ivir Maher has not been summoned for the grand jury of the North Riding at this assizes Why or wherefore this is the case we cannot pronounce except it be that his honest poli tics and his manly advocacy of his rights stand in his way of the distinction for the present This system cannot stand It must be inquired into It must be put down We are aware that gentlemen who for the past thirty years have invariably served on juries in this county have not been summoned this year This iniquitious and insulting system is clearly traceable to the influence of the executive but be this as it may the Catholics and Repealers of this county owe it to themselves to their country not to lose a day without meeting remonstrating and proclaiming against a wrong so grievous so insulting and in everyway so libellous to their character as Irishmen and subjects of the Queen ADVANCE WAGES It affords us much pleasure to be able to state that Henry Comerford Esq JP Wm Grieves Esq Mangan Esq TC and several other gentlemen have increased the rate of wages to the numerous body of men to whom their establishments give employment 2s per week each inorder to enable them to meet the increased demands upon them HUMBLING A POOR LAW COMMISSIONER Mr Hancock A We understand that this gentleman has at length felt it to be prudent to make tho amplest apology to the guardians of the Gort Union for tho insult he offered to Mr Lahiff as well as for his bearing towards them generally The amende has lost much of its grace by the circumstances under which it has been extor ted and we learn that the remark of the guardians on the apology being tendered was that they regretted his being ever appointed to their union Galway Vindicator AWUL EXTERMINATION TENANTRY To add to the misery of the wretched peasantry of thia unfortunate country the landlords are ably contributing to their bitter draught Day after day we hear of families aye hundreds of wretches turned to die in the ditches by their heartless oppressors the landlords of this country Not later than yesterday we are told Mrs errata dis possessed not fewer than four hundred and forty seven wretched beings turning them upon the world and razing their huts to the earth A poor man whose family was lying in fever implored to have the walls of his cabin left up in order to shelter them but to no purpose A poor woman with her child at her breast was not even allowed time to quit her domicile and in the act of running out a beam fell and we are told killed the infant in her arms If we ara correctly informed Mr and Mrs Gerrard have dispos sessed upwards of two thousand human beings within the last few years Roscommon Journal THE POTATO AMINE We regret to state that the price of potatoes rose consi derably in our markets of Saturday last They are now from 18d to 2s a peck being a rise of nearly Is in the course of a week In fact it is becoming difficult to get them at any price Unless something be done for the poor and that speedily the horrors of famine will be upon us much earlier even than we expected Sligo Champion AMINE ON THE CONTINENT We learn from Placentia that on the 24th ult the town was threatened with serious riot from the government having attempted to raise the price of bread from 10 to 13 centimes the pound The populace having attempted to assail the government house the Austrians on duty fired and killed four persons wounding several others On the fol lowing day several bakers shops were attacked until at length the magistrates were compelled to post up bills announcing that the price was again reduced to its former rate and flour lowered 3f a sack The people appeared to be pacified by this concession but dragoons were still stationed at the provision shops Good Medium Low Chesterfields inks of this Meeting are 8 Good Tweeds
