JIMMIE FIDLER IN HOLLYWOOD Hollywood, Jan 25--Some weeks ago, production activity came to a halt at Warner Brothers, and approximately 2,500 employes were either laid off or fired.

The studio heads said they wanted time to Jtunk over the current situation confronting the movie industry and come to carefully considered decisions about their future product. This week, one of the first results of that "careful was announced in Hollywood trade papers. Warner Brothers contemplates the filming of John Steinbeck's malodorous mess of literary sewage, "The Wayward Bus 1 Humphrey Bogart is tentatively slated for the starring role. What a prospect for movie fans' 'The Wayward Bus" is one of the nastiest books of modern times--a story that ranges from dipsomania nymphomama, a tale without a single admirable character. Into it, John Steinbeck, a man once capable of writing such masterpieces as "The Red Pony," poured all venom of his viewpoint or humanity and then had the con- sumate gall to present his collection of frustrated, drink-crazed and sex-addled characters as a cross-section of the American public 1 And that, so help mt, i( the book that is being considered for filming as a starter in Warner Brothers' new production pro- grain' Of course, it can't of, "Main Street," under such a title as "Fifth Avenue?" written--but, of ducers will try course, to get the pro- by with Broil slices of bologna and they will form cups that may be filled with creamed potatoes; sprinkle paprika and garnish with parsley.

Personally, I hope it will be received with public indignation it deserves. For the last several newspapers both here and in England have been lambasting- Rita Hayworth because of her much-publicized romance with Aly Khan Such words "squalid," "vulgar" and "lurid" have been hurled in her direction, but not beauteous Rita, almost as noted in Hollywood for her temper as is for her curves, offered a retort But I think we're very apt to hear a counterblast from Miss Hayworth within the next few days Her philosophy has enabled her to shrug- off criticism of her morals but now certain Hollywood scribes have written something that wil really cut too deep for comfort They've been intimating that she's getting fat! Speaking of stars with tempera I'm interested the news thai Dane Clark and Laraine Day will be co-starred in the Hakim Brothers' production of "Twilight." If that news is on up-and-up, Hakims, in mv opinion, deserve medals attesting thtir courage lark, for the last two yeara, has been the incorrigible lad of Warner Brothers lot, staging temperamental tizzies in such number finally hig harassed suspended him from the pay roll Miss Day, who to been infected by the famous bslliger- ence of her Lippy Durocher, spent more time battling with her last producer than she did before the cameras.

I'm planning to spend considerable time on "Twilight" set when production under way. The potentialities are interesting.
