PRESS OPINIONS ON MRS. G. LINN.EUS BANKS'S WORKS. It is se'dom that we have so good a story to read as this. Without anv high colouring or artificial excitement, the reader's attention is fixed from the beginning of the book to the nid.

There is much in the book which reminds us ot Scott'-CWe. "Mrs. Banks has proved that she can travel over perpetually-trodden ground, and yet discover a new path," London Rivieic. "Mrs, Banks has written a capital novel. The sensations are good strong ones, yet founded on fact.

The mystery is orked delicately, so as to surprise the reader when ultimately explained, yet it is an historic mystery." Z7ie Tress. Mrs. Banks's svmpathy with the life, language, and modes of thouaht of the peasantry is as keen as it appears to be reliable anii coriect. The phase of life which she delineates is fast disippfratitig, and our author has done good service in thus keeping green the memory of our fathers." The Reader. 1 he book is far above the run of common three-volume novels evincing much literary power in not a few graphic descriptions of manners and local customs." Spectator.

We can honestly recommend the story as nr.il naturally told. The characters are life-like and real." llanclteiter Ovarcian. lite stray bas an interest from tbc evident pleasure which the author lias taken in her own work. There are touches oi real life ami character." Athcnmtin. "Mis.

Mrs. Ranks' stoiy is never dull. She paints north country life with a detiiil showing large knowledge, and with only til in vi-ils over several well-known scenes.

The author has sketched the hero from his cradle to his prime, with an appreciation of a noble but natural type of manhood that is very rare in a woman." Times. -Declined, with thanks. H. C. THE PRESBYTERIAN OHURCH AND THE "ALLIANCE NEWS." To the Editor of the Mercury and Post. Sik I was rather surprised to find iu your impres-Bion of this morning a lengthy communication Irom the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church.

Alter what passta at a protracted interview with members of Session certain yoomeaway with the impression that before any turther publicity civen to the subject I should have been allowed to correct the two slight mistakes I bad made uiiintou-tionallv. Mr. Rutherford gave his account ot the meeting of the members of Session, convened at Mr. Bunions office. Those who heard it and also those ivho read your paragraph could not help coming to the conclusion that it was a fabrication from beginning to end I now givo you the facts as they came to mo.

Humours were afloat concerning such a meeting as alluded to, and having them confirmed by a post-card calling the meeting, I wrote the paragraph to the Alliance A'-ira. The following is a copy of the postcard 10, Clare-street. Will you attend a meeting of Session at Mr. Dnnlop's office on Saturday evening at seven o'clock." Now, I think it will convey to your readers, as it certainly did to me, that it was a meeting of Session. Mr.

Rutherford, however, states that it could not be a lawful meeting of Session without his presence, and as Mr. Rutherford was not there, it was only a meeting of the members of Session. 1 also find that the members of Session wore not summoned to meet at a public-house, where intoxicating drinks are sold, hut in the ollice of the wholesale department. On the above facts I make no comments, but remain, your truly, D. Scot t.

Paul-street. ART, SCIENCE, AND LITERATURE. Messrs. Macmillan and Co. have in preparation, and will publish in May, a volume of "Public Addresses" by Mr.

John Bright, M.P., edited by Professor J. E. Thorold Rogers. Mr. Matthew Arnold is preparing a selection from Wordsworth's poems for the well-known Golden Treasury Series.

This volume may be expected about Whitsuntide. The fourth volume of Mr. Theodore Martin's "Life of the Prince Consort" will be published by Messrs. Smith, Elder, and about the end April. The volume brings the narrative down to the end of 1359 a fifth is needed to finish the work.

Mr. Gladstone is going to publish his lecture on Dean Book, It will be published by Mr. Bentley. Messrs. Macmillan and Co, will publish before the end of the vcur, a volume of Essays on Art and Archaeology, by Mr.

U. T. Newton, C.13. The collection will represent the work of nearly 30 years. The most racy of the six pieces in Mr.

Browning's new volume is to be "Ned llrusx," a man given to oaths and ill-conditioned generally, who has been converted by John Riuiyan, and yet finds the old Hesh striving hard against the new spirit, especially in the matter of swearing. The Zulu is rapidly becoming the centre of a literature. Mr. Charles H. Eden has in the press a novel entitled Ulo, in Veldt and Laager." The plit is entirely laid amongst the Zulus, with whom the author has lived.

It will be published by Messrs. Marcus Ward and Co. Mr. John Owen, whose name is familiar to the readers of Frasir as the author of some remiyrkablo papers on philosophical subjects which appeared in that magazine when Mr. Jj'ronde was editor, has nearly completed his work on the Sceptics, which he has now been engaged on for some years.

The Director of the National Gallery has made a selection from the drawings by Do Wint ami Catterinole, bequeathed to the nation by Mr. John Henderson he has declined, it is said, more than a hundred of them, and as soon as it is practicable the chosen samples will be exhibited in the Gallery. We (Atficti'vumj hear that some very interesting mural paintings have been discovered, and in part uncovered, in the church of JTriskney, near Boston. The whole of the clear-story walls, both north and south, are said to lie covered witli them. The subjects, as far as, can be at present mado out, are all taken from the 015 Testament.

An introductory essay on the Philosophy of History has been promised by the Rev. Dean Stanley for Volume V. of "The Hundred Greatest Men," now being published by Messrs. Sampson Low and Oo. Mr.

Louis Stevenson, whose first hook, An Iuland Voyage," recounted his experience as a traveller by a canoe on French rivers, is now about to relate his Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes." Messrs. 0, Kegan Paul and Co. are the publishers. Me3srt. C.

Kegan Paul and Co. are preparing for publication a new contribution to the history of Holland. The book is by Mr. James Geddes, and is entitled "The Historv of the Administration of John De Witt, Grand Pensionary of Holland." The first volume will cover a period of about thirty years, from 1623 to 1651, and deals with the period of the Stuart exiles in Holland, the covp of the Prince of Orange (William IIL's father), his conspiracy to get the Dutch to adopt the Stuart cause, the first Anglo-Dutch War, and a clandestine negotiation opened by De Witt with the English Parliament, and the later negotiation between him and Cromwell for peace. The Cambridge University Press has in preparation a collected edition of Prof.

Stokes's mathematical and physical papers, reprinted from the various transactions and journals in which they have appeared during the last thirty or forty yeara. Additional notes by the author will give extreme value to this much desired publication. The planet Mercury will be at its greatest eastern elongation on the afternoon of the 29th inst. The declination being about 12 cleg, north, the planet will not sat till about two hours after sunset, and will therefore bs conspicuous from half-past seven till a little after eight, if the sky be clear near the horizon. The late Maillart's charming opera, "Le3 Dragons de Villars, which had such a long run at the Paris Lyrique, has been adapted for the Folly Theatre, London, and will be produced on Easter Monday.

The three-act comic opera "Fatinifea," by Herr Franz von Suppv, which had a ran of more than four hundred nights in Vienna, and was almost equally successful in Brussels, lias been produced at the Nou-veautvs in Paris with the greatest success. The hilarity of the Parisian audience is provoked by two Special Correspondents, English and French, who are reporters of the Russian war. Herr Andersen, the celebrated chessplayer, professor of mathematics at the University of Breslau, died in that city on the 14th inst. At London, daring the Exhibition oi 1851, he wns winner of the fust prize in the International Chess Tournament, defeating Staunton, the British champion KieseriUky, of Paris, Liiven-thai and Szen, of Hungary, Jaenisch, of Russia; and ten other eminent players. In 1802, at the tournament of the British Chess Association held at Bristol, he again secured the first prize, as he did also at Baden in the year 1870, In 1873, at Vienna, and last year in Paris, he was a prize winner, on the latter occasion scoring two victories from the American champion Mackenzie, in a manner quite worthy of his 1851 style.

Throughout his long chess career, he was only defeated by one opponent, Paul Morphy, the American, Toet Caucuses. Mr, F. O. Crump writes to the Times: You say in your Election Intelligence, under the heiul that the candidature of myself is disavowed by the local Conservatives. I must beg you to allow me to state that the opinion of the local Conservatives has not yet lieen taken.

Two or three gentlemen who claim to speak for the Conservative party have selected a candidate, but it is notorious in Colchestor that the general body of the electors resent this dictation. I have letters from Colchester in my possession expressing1 delight that, at last, the Conservative electors nrc to havo an opportunity of eleetine; aB their representative a candidate who is not the nominee of this insignificant, self-constituted Conservative eaueus. I intend to give these electors an opportunity of exercising an independent franchise." The Electric Light. Colonel Haywood, the engineer to the London Commission of Sewers, has reported to fcham on the recent experiment in lighting1 the Holborn Viaduct by electricity. by gas. Applying these rates to a whole year, electric lighting-would cost about 3072, and gas lighting 110. Electric lighting, at present charges, was therefore about times as dear aa gas lighting. It was, of course, probable that, as a permanent arrangement, electricity would cost lo3S than that, while there wns reason to believe that no material reduction would be made in the cost of lighting by gas. As to illuminating power, Col.

Haywood estimates approximately that it is about seven times that of gas. The Commission have resolved not to continue the experiment. Throat Irritation. Soreness and dryness, tickling and Irritation, inducing cough and affecting the roice. For these symptoms use Erica's Glycerine Jodubes.
