Both Cox and Connally expressed themselves in favor of the two per cent sales tax voted by the Legislature last year, but both would remove some inequities. Connally said he was unalterably opposed to a personal income tax which is the alternative. Cox said he thinks the sales tax, with adjustments, can meet the state's requirements for the next several years. One question on national affairs, "What do you think of the UN as a peace keeper," got into the box. Cox said the UN had failed as a peace keeper, citing the Laos situation, Cuba and Berlin.

Connally said he thought the armed might of the US had kept the peace, and that no one could measure the effectiveness of the UN, but if offers a forum for exchange of views. Each candidate was given a two minute chance to say why he wanted to be Governor of Texas. Briefly stated, each said he thought he could provide the leadership and meet the revision. Their husbands, each a candidate for governor, proved incidental. The unusual occasion was a non partisan political rally sponsored by the Dallas League of Women Voters. In the nonpartisan atmosphere, kept that way by careful ground rules and a stop watch, the candidates offered nothing new in most general election campaign in history. The ground rules even su-pressed the women who came in their fall finery. They held in check the rival Republican and Democratic lasses who had contested with one another to have the largest partisan group present at the non-partisan luncheon.

Doing the talking, but closely limited by time, were John Connally, Democrat; Jack Cox, Republican and Jack Carswell, Constitution Party. Looking their very best which did not seem to be difficult were Mrs. Connally in green, Mrs. Carswell in red and Mrs. Cox in a beige outfit that prompted one Dallas newspaper society girl to comment, "It is the exact color of her eyes." It is doubtful if there was a person in the room who has not already picked his or her choice in the Nov.

6 election. Therefore it must have been gratifying in keeping with the non-partisan theme, that the three parties in Texas have kept alive the tradition of a beautiful woman in the Texas mansion. In this soothing setting, there was an uneasy feeling that John Connally and Jack Cox, both of whom are reaching that critical stage in a hotly contested campaign when nerves become jittery, would have jumped at the chance to claw at one another's eyes. The candidates came into Dallas from widely separated areas, but were acutely aware that in the past few days, each has sharpened the verbal needle. If any candidate stole the show, it was Jack Carswell of Houston, the Constitution Party candidate, practically unknown in Dallas, who poked considerable dry humor at the representatives of the parties: "The old parties whose campaigns mean nothing more than who is In this year and who is out next year." It can be truthfully said that Carswell was the only one of the trio who drew non-partisan applause.

He had nothing In the way of organizational support to start with. Avery Mays, president of Dallas Chamber of Commerce, was moderator. The candidates drew for the order of their seven minute presentation, and for the order in which they would answer questions submitted from the floor, limiting their answers to two minutes each. The time-keeper, Mrs. Donald E.

Sanders, of the Dallas League, was unyielding with the gaveL The opening statements especially gave Connally and Cox the opportunity to stick unswervingly to their theme songs. Connally put. emphasis on the challenge of the times to furnish leadership in government and brain power in industry through improved educational facilities. Cox, handicapped by a sore throat, gave federal encroachment on the powers of the state less vocal emphasis than usual. Carswell stood strong for the Constitution.

Six questions filtered through to the candidates. Being in Dallas one would expect the first question to a 1 1 for a stand on Love Field, but it was for an expression on the Trinity passage to the Gulf. Connally was for it, and believed such a project would be worthy of federal participation because it is a navigable stream. Cox said he would rather know who owns the land to be improved and made more valuable before he committed himself. Carswell did not think the Trinity project should be developed unless it is a 100 per cent Texas affair.

On repeal of the poll tax Connally voiced his support and pointed out it is a strong plank in the Democratic platform. Cox would have the Legislature submit an amendment to the constitution and if the poll tax is repealed he would provide a strong revision of the election laws to guarantee honest elections. Carswell is for the poll tax as is. Whether the candidates would support the national nominees and the platform of his party in 1964: Cox brought applause from his partisans when he said he would not commit himself to support nominees or platforms until he knows how or what they are. Connally got the Democratic hand when he said he had always been a Democrat, and always supported the ticket and would support the Democratic nominees in 1964.

On this occasion, Connally slipped in one of the few stingers that got into the carefully controlled situation. Obviously referring to Cox's defection FOR School. Gym. Work. Dating.
