Republicans are invited to be present. HOSTSTTZS, Chairman, C. S. O. THE CHOICE.

A canvass has just been made fay representativea of ihe New York Tribune and Erie Dispatch, of the strength of ihe tarious prominent! saenfciosed candidates for Presiden and Vice President, among RepuL lieans of tha five great States Xevr Yorfe, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ia diaua and Illinois, with a most ia teresiing result, in view of the nea. approach of ihe time for the Na tional Coaventioa. The methot adopted to gain this expression opinion was to correspond with th members of Central Committees an other prominent Republicans every county ia the five States named. In this expressions were received from two to ten per sens in eaebrone of the 409 count: in the States. The wsult shov Mr.

Blaine to be far in the lead all the candidates named, being th first choice of forty per cent, whil Mr. Arthur is first choice of seven per cent Mr. Edmunds first choice of about eight per cent General Sherman eight per ceniL, and John Sherman Soar per cent, while the choice of the others scattering between Harrison, Lin coin, Foster (the choice of tw counties out of 409). Cnllum. Wash bnrne.

Miller, Evans, "the nee" and "any man." Anothersignificant factdeveloped by this widespread inquiry is tha Robert Lincoln is first choree of about sixty per cent of the 409 counties for Vice President On this point the Tribune 533-5: "This is a curious result, because whatever Presidential gossip there has beei. about Mr. Lincoln has always connected his name with the first place on the ticket But if there is strength merely in a name, Mr Lincoln's would help the Republican ticket in the second place as much as in the first" The Tribune adds: "We attach importance to such indications of public sentiment mainly because they enable the Republican party to understand itself. So long as these inquiries are directed only to that end. and not to the promotion of jealousies among factions or to efforts to break down candidates, they do good.

Of the SS counties in Ohio Blame is first choice in 34; John Sherman, 13; Wm. T- Sherman, Arthur. Edmunds. 6: Logan, Charles Foster, Lincoln, 1: Harrison, the nominee, no choice. 6.

Total. SS. Second choice by 19; Edmnnds. 12; Blaine, 11; Arthur, 10; John Sherman. General Sherman, no second choice, 19.

-For Vii President Secretary Lincoln-is first choice of 46 counties; Harrison, 12; Hiscock, F. Frye, of Maine. J. B. Foraker, Charles Foster, W.

Q. Giesham. J. B. Hawler, J.

F. Hartranf Pennsylvania, Governor Porter, Indiana. no choice. 14; for the nominee, 6. Total, SS.

The figures from the other four States indicate substantially the same sentiment by counties, showing a net result for the leading candidates that we have already given, above, With regard to Mr. Arthur's administration there appears to be a wide-spread feeling ot placid satisfaction which, however, borders upon indifference toward himself- He has done better than anybody expected he would do. and yet he is B9t the man to fill the expectations or desires of the American people as the President of our great Republic. Mr. Blaine has been twice a candidate, and twice defeated by political rancor and-intrigue.

He is not BOW a candidate actively; but he is the stronger with the people, for aJHbat. We believe that no "unit.rule,"' or ring rule under whatever name, can prevent his nominauoE by the coming Republican National Convention. The sentiment is too overwhelmingly in his favor io be oveicome, even by the acknowledged power of Arthur the Administration tools at his back, and a host of other political aspirants. The Eastern States, where Blaine is the strongest have not been heard from. The States whose pulses have been felt caa therefore be considered as representing a.

fair average. And, in advance of ihe meeting of ihe Convention, ii may fairly be presumed that no stronger Presi-. dential ticket caa be pat ia theSeld the Republican party thaa with BEVIEW: MARCH 1, 1884. KLAIXK OF XADCZ. CoL jBayoe, Congressman frora the Allegheny district.
