Navy Sunflare Gefs Needed Data Project POINT MUGU, Calif. U-The navy has completed, with a 105-mile-high rocket flight, its project Sunflare aimed at linding out more about the the sun's effect on radio broadcasting and the weather. The project began last July 1 at offshore San Nicolas Is- land with the firing of the first 14 Nike-Deacon rockets, which rose to 80 miles. The 15th and last firing was a Nike-Asp rocket, which hit 105 miles. The firings, conducted by personnel of the navy's missile test center here, were timed to coincide with solar flares --Riant tongues of flame on the sun's surface.

Missilemen were alerted to the flares by watchers at obsen atones around the world. DATA VIA RADIO Instruments in the rockers radioed back to the ground data on X-rays and ultraviolet radiation at various altitudes. Preliminary studies indicate that during flareups X-rays cause ionization of the atmos- phere at low altitudes, resulting radio fadeout in the 5-20 megacycle band. The presence of X-rays during solar disturbance also supports the view that the eruptions are of electromagnetic origin, says Dr. Talbot Chubb of the naval research laboratory.
