Tolal Construction For Corporate Limits Is Near 8868,000 Construction of new homes In Cumberland last year was double that of 194G. according to the annual report on building permits released by the city engineer's office, Permits -were issued for'lH new residences estimated to cost $464,300, as compared to only 54 such permits issued lost year, -with an estimated cost of $200,375. Those ligurcs are included in the overall totnl of 101 permits issued in 1947 lor all types of new construction, amounting to 5867,890. The corresponding figure for 194G was 137 permits totaling $343,348. During December, the 11 building permits granted included four for new homes estimated to cost $18,000, and two for new service stations to cost $11,000.

In December, 1946. there were no applications for permits to build new homes. In that month the total cost of new construction of other types was $10,400. -while in December. 1947, new construction totaled $29,000.

Permits granted for remodeling and improvements showed a slight decrease last year, -with 133 permits totaling $130,115 as compared to 152 such permits in 1946 for an estimated cost of $257,045. The number of applications for occupancy permits was considerably less In 1947. with 111 us compared to 158 in 1946. Of the 111 applications. 74 were granted by City Engineer Ralph L.

Rizer and the remaining 37 were referred to the Board o' Zoning Appeals. The board granted 29 and refused five. The remaining three were withdrawn. Of the 1946 total of 158 applications, 120 were granted by Rizer and 38 were referred. The zoning board granted 27 and refused six.
