A. Wetherby, of Niles, was in St. Joseph last week with Comrade Allen, of the same city. Mr. Wetherby will be presented by to the coming Republican County Convention as a suitable candidate for the office of Register of Deeds.

For years he has been a a i hard-working Republican of the south end of the county, and he has nevor before asked for recognition at tho hands of his party. On account of impaired health he has been compelled to close out his boot and s-hoe business in Niles and seek other avenues for a livelihood. All who become acquainted with Mr. Wetherby like his appearance manly conduct, and should he bn tho nominee of the Convention he would be elected by a lino majority and make an excellent Register. Shot His Wife.

Paul JLorscher, a resident of St. Joseph and a- fisherman by occupation, who was one of the party of three who recently capsized in their boat early in the morning near the north pier several weeks ago, shot his wife at Montague, on Friday night of last week. While living in St. Joseph it was known that he and his wife were having trouble between them, but tho real cause of the same the TUAVJCLER- HKJIALD did not take the trouble to ascertain. A dispatch from Montague, of the 12th, to the Detroit Free Press, gives particulars of the shooting an follows "Paul Lorsclior shot his wife last night and attempted suicide immediately after.

Some six months ago a young woman giving her a as Eliza Kreitner, 3- years old, sought and obtained employment us cook at the Franklin House in this village. She appeared quiet arid unobtrusive and did her work a i Some ten days ago n. man came here and claimed to be the woman's husband. She refused to see or have anything to do with him. Last evening lie again put in an, appearance at the hotel and asked to see his wife.

The request was denied, but by means of an employe word was gotten to is subsequent developments showed, must have accompanied him to the west end of the village in the neighborhood of the i school building. About 11 o'clock a woman's cries, followed by pistol shots, were heard in this vicinity. A man named David Fowler, residing close by, heard tlio outcries and sliots and started in the direction of the disturbance. lie soon eame across a man who, upon seeing himself discovered, fired a shot, but whether at himself or Fowler is not known. Fowler immediately went for the man with a club, upon which the man fired two shots, this time evidently at himself, and sunk to the ground insensible.

Marshal Dykehuise was sent for, and when he arrived the man had partially recovered and was leaning against a fence, bleeding profusely from an ugly wound in his forehead. When spoken to the wretch said, pointing, "she lies over there around the corner," and upon going to the point indicated the poor woman was found, not quite dead, but soon expired. She bad two bullet holes in her abdomen, either being sufficient to cause death. The body was taken to Coroner Moag's store, where an inquest was held this forenoon. The body wns greatly bruised in various places and her hnt was found in the school yard and a glove at another point, indicating a desperate struggle for life.

The previous history as far as can be learned is that the family lives at St. Joseph, this State, the man following fishing for a Hying. They had four children, two of which are in the poor house. The woman had left him and refused to live with i on account of his failure to support her, a'nd his brutal and conduct, his only excuse for the horrible deed is that she had been improperly intimate with other men and that she was now trying to be a lady. He had previously threatened her, and stated after the shooting that lie came to shoot her and had clone so purposely.

Threats of lynching are freely indulged in by the i i a and liorrilied citizens, but a speedy examination and waiver by the prisoner hurried matters that he was taken to the Muskegon jail this afternoon. The wound in the murderer's head is ugly, but not dangerous. The parties had been married about eleven years, the oldest child being about 10 years old. The woman's parents are respectable farmers living near Coloma, in this State." Stcyeiisville. Showers have all gone around to the east i the last month.

Potatoes and blackberries will prove failures without immediate and copious rains. Wrn. Mielke's new brick residence is a model of architectal beauty and would grace a town of more pretentious than Stevensville. It will soon be completed. Jos.

Dempster, of St. Joseph, is doing the painting. Wheat is in shock, and never better in quality, and will be a large yield in this vicinity. Corn looks well, but must have rain soon. Grass is a medium crop, and has been secured in good condition.

The raspberry season commenced early, and berries have ripened prematurely. There has been glut of Turner berries in Chicago through the entire season. The large fields of this variety are a curse to the fruit growing interests of the county. Pickers, box makers, transportation lines, and corn- mission men, all taking nearly all of the raspberry receipts, and fruit growers all working for nothiug; but bread uud butter will be cheap uoxt winter. W.

AV. West Michigan Fruit Growers' Society. This organization recently formed includes the two western tiers of coup- ties in the State. At a meeting held July 1,1884, it constructed its working machinery by adopting its By-Laws and appointing its committees. Among its By-Laws are these two shall be appointed annually by the President a Committee of three on Marketing whose it shall be by visit or correspondence to ascertain all desirable points for distribution, the amount of each i of i needed at such points and the best houses through which to make sales, reporting same to tiie Executive Board in i to arrange the business for each fruit season.

The Executive Board shall then determine and recommend to the members of this Society these points of distribution. Committee provided for in Section 7, shall ascertain as near as practicable the supply of fruit on each successive season, reporting the same whenever called upon by the Society or Executive Board and on that basis shall obtain from all available transportation companies lowest terms of freight for direct and speedy shipment- through to all selected points of distribution. These terms the Committee shall report to the Executive Board for its action or recommendation. Under these By-Laws the President appointed as the Committee on Market- i A. S.
