tf A dispute over playing conditions forced postponement of a world chess championship quarter -final match here between Dobby Fischer of the United States and Mark Tai-manov of the Soviet Union. Fischer, 28, and Tai-manov, 45, were to begin the 10-game match Thursday at the University of Columbia's Graduate Center. An official said the first game has been rescheduled for Sunday to allow time for a sui-day to allow time for a suitable playing room to be chosen. The dispute arose when both Fischer and Taiman-ov rejected the graduate center's television room, chosen by Canadian Chess Federation officials for the match. Both said the room was too small.

The only room in the i 1 ding acceptable to both sides was the center's library. Library Refused But Malcom McGregor, UBC classics dean, refused to allow use of the library saying that the center is a private club and he cannot bar students from one of the popular gathering spots. Soviet officials accused UBC and Canada of a lack of hospitality, and at one point threatened to take the four-man Russian team home to Moscow. Winner of the match is to advance to the semifinals of the challengers' round. Other matches were scheduled to start Thursday between Denmark's Bent Larsen and East Ger-many's Wolfgang Uhl-raann; West Germany's Robert Huebner and Russia's Tigran Petrosian; and Russians Viktor Korchnoi and Yefim Geller.

Winner of the challengers, rounds would be eligible to meet world champion Boris Spaasky of the Soviet Union in Moscow next year. After 13 of the scheduled 15 qualifying rounds, the were: Aces, 203; France, 165; Australia, 128; China, 103; North America, 89; Brazil, 77.
