Dr. a native of Demopolis in the rural "black belt" of Alabama and long time Birmingham businessman, established Citizens Federal in 1957 to be a source of home mortgage funds for "less affluent citizens of Birmingham" both Negro and white. Since 1957, Citizens Federal has served tens of thousands. Birmingham's rate of Negro home ownership is today one of the highest in the nation and highest in the South.

Dr. Gaston said last week that. "Our new building is a symbol of Negro achievement. We are intensely proud of our accomplishment, and hope it will serve as an example to I other negroes of what is pos sible. And because we do serve our white fellow citizens also, we think we have created a medium of unity." The combined asets of Gaston's interests are estimated at $20 million employing 450 people with an annual payroll of $1,750,000.
